CHEVY CHASE, MD, February 22, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Msgr. John Francis Wippel with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Msgr. Wippel celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Msgr. Wippel has devoted his entire academic career to The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, first as a student and then as a member of the faculty. First hired in 1960 as an instructor of philosophy, he became an ordinary (=full) professor professor of philosophy in 1972 and the Theodore Basselin professor of philosophy in 2001. During his tenure on campus, he held the roles of academic vice president between 1989 and 1996 and provost between 1996 and 1997. In 1969, Msgr. Wippel also spent the spring semester as a visiting associate professor at the University of California in San Diego.

During his some 55 years in the field, Msgr. Wippel has maintained an interest in metaphysics, medieval philosophy, Thomas Aquinas, radical Aristotelianism, Godfrey of Fontaines and late 13th century thought at the University of Paris. As a result, he has written extensively in his field, contributing chapters to several books and numerous articles to scholarly journals in his field. He was the associate editor for the "Yale Library of Medieval Philosophy" book series in 2009, and authored several books of his own as well, including "Metaphysical Thought of Godfrey of Fontaines" in 1981, which received a Mercier Prize, "Metaphysical Themes in Thomas Aquinas" in 1984, "Boethius of Dacia: 'On the Supreme Good.' 'On the Eternity of the World, On Dreams," in 1987, "Medieval Reactions to the Encounter Between Faith and Reason" in 1995, "The Metaphysical Thought of Thomas Aquinas: From Finite Being to Uncreated Being" in 2000 and "Metaphysical Themes in Thomas Aquinas II" in 2007. He has also coauthored or edited several other volumes.

Becoming involved in his profession due to a desire to become a Roman Catholic priest, part of Msgr. Wippel's training program at the seminary involved philosophy and theology. Receiving a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in philosophy from The Catholic University of America in 1955 and 1956, respectively, he continued his education with a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from The Catholic University of America in 1960. Following these accomplishments, Msgr. Wippel went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium in 1965 and concluded his education with a postdoctoral degree in Philosophy (Maître-Agrégé de l'Ecole Saint Thomas) from the same university in 1981.

Notably, Msgr. Wippel received a scholarship after his first two years of college study through the Basselin program between 1953 and 1956. The scholarship program was a special program set up for candidates to the priesthood from different dioceses from all over the country. He later was accepted as a Penfield fellow between 1961 and 1963 and a National Endowment of the Humanities fellow between 1970 and 1971 and 1984 and 1985. Furthermore, Msgr. Wippel was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters from the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto, Canada, in 2005.

Past president of the Metaphysical Society of America, the American Catholic Philosophical Association and the Society of Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy, Msgr. Wippel was also a longtime member of the American Philosophical Association and the Medieval Academy of America and is now an Emeritus Academician of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas.

In light of all his accomplishments, Msgr. Wippel has been included in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
