Mr. Ackland retired in 2013 from a very successful 45-year career in journalism and education. Working in the field as a freelance journalist beginning in 1968 in Vietnam, he was later hired by the Dispatch News Service in Washington, DC, as an assistant editor in 1971. He then spent another 12 years as a reporter for several publications between 1972 and 1984, including the Des Moines Register and the Chicago Tribune, before becoming the editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in Chicago, IL, from 1984 to 1991. From there, Mr. Ackland began teaching as an associate professor of journalism at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he remained for 22 years until 2013.
Traveling to Vietnam as a humanitarian worker in his early 20s, Mr. Ackland spent one year with the International Voluntary Services (IVS) during 1967, during which time he taught English to Vietnamese students in Hue. While doing his volunteer work, he became outraged at the atrocities he saw being perpetrated in the country and how little of it was being reported in American media. Mr. Ackland resolved to go into freelance journalism so that he could shine a light on what he witnessed. After resigning from IVS he stayed in Vietnam in 1968 and worked for six months as a researcher for the RAND Corporation and then for several months as an independent journalist.
Mr. Ackland is the author of "Credibility Gap: A Digest of the Pentagon Papers" in 1972 and "Making a Real Killing: Rocky Flats and the Nuclear West" in 1999, with its paperback edition published in 2002. He also co-edited "Why Are We Still in Vietnam?" in 1970 and "Assessing the Nuclear Age" in 1986. During his career, Mr. Ackland headed the Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism between 1996 and 2013. He also directed the University of Colorado Center for Environmental Journalism from 1992 to 2003 before serving as co-director for another 10 years from 2003 to 2013. He was a longstanding member of the Society of Environmental Journalists and Investigative Reporters and Editors.
Mr. Ackland served on various local boards as well, including as a board member and chair of the Third Unitarian Church in Chicago from 1984 to 1987. He later served on the board of Global Outlook in Palo Alto, CA, from 1991 to 1994 and the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington, DC, from 1993 to 1998.
While working for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the organization won the National Magazine Award in 1987 under Mr. Ackland's editorship. The award recognized the coverage of the Chernobyl disaster. He has also been honored with a 1977 George Polk Award for Local Reporting, a Fulbright Fellowship in 2008, and John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008. He also received a research and writing grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in 1990. He has been cited in the first edition of Who's Who in the Media and Communication and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the West.
Mr. Ackland earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from the University of Colorado in 1966 after studying overseas as an exchange student at the University of Bonn in Germany from 1964 to 1965. He completed a Master of Arts at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in 1970. In 1988, Mr. Ackland notably received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago.
Married to Carol S. Stutzman, Mr. Ackland has three children. In retirement, he enjoys writing and being outdoors as much as possible. He especially loves hiking, biking, snowshoeing and camping. He also likes to read.
