With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Christensen was an asylum officer for the United States Immigration Service in Lyndhurst, NJ, from 1992 to 1997, after a friend encouraged him to accept the position. Prior to obtaining this role, he was executive director of Maine Common Cause from 1988 to 1992, having been an attorney for refugees for AYUDA and CARACEN in Washington, DC, from 1987 to 1988 and Centro Para Immigrantes in Houston, TX, from 1984 to 1987. He was previously a staff attorney for the elderly in Bangor, ME, in 1980, having been a consultant for the Bureau of the Elderly for the State of Maine in 1979.

Outside of his primary endeavors, Mr. Christensen travelled to Nicaragua with Witness for Peace in 1984. He was one of four long term witnesses who opposed the government in their support of the Contras. On returning to the USA, he volunteered to help Jesse Jackson in his pursuit of the presidency.

From 1974 to 1978, Mr. Christensen was director of student legal services at the University of Maine, and from 1973 to 1974, he was a lawyer with Pine Tree Legal Assistance. Earlier in his career, he was deputy director of Care, Inc., in Honduras and Chile from 1965 to 1969, as well as a school teacher at Lincoln School in San Jose, Costa Rica, in 1959.

Mr. Christensen began his career with the United States Army in 1950, serving in the Republic of Korea in 1953. He then pursued an education with Middlebury College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1958. He subsequently attended New York University School of Law, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1965. Mr. Christensen has been admitted to practice law in the states of Maine and Texas, as well as before the United States District Court for the District of Maine.

A leading voice in his industry, Mr. Christensen has been affiliated with a number of organizations in his community. He is a member of the Maine Woodmen's Association and the Democratic Socialists of America, where he was founder of the Maine chapter in 1975. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his contributions to pro bono work clinics. He set up and ran several pro bono legal clinics in Bangor, ME. He helped Spruce Run, a women's advisory organization, set up a free clinic for women fleeing abusive husbands. He taught them how to do pro se divorces. He also set up a free legal clinic for Vietnam veterans for Agent Orange sickness and PTSD. It was in Bangor and took place on Saturday morning. He served as honorary member of the Maine Woodmen's Association for helping them organize and become an entity of power in Maine. The United States Army gave him a Jump Master Award, Middlebury College named him a Trevali Scholar, and he received a Service in Haiti Award from the INS Commissioner. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including the 27th edition of Who's Who in the East; A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn; Witness for Peace by Ed Griffin-Nolan; and Where is Nicaragua? by Peter Davis.
