With 35 years of professional excellence to her credit, Dr. Swain most recently served as provost and vice president of academy affairs for Binghamton University between 1993 and 2010, where she designed the structure for the College of Community and Public Affairs and still currently acts as a supervisor to doctoral students. Earlier in her career, she joined the University of Michigan as director of the School of Nursing's Ph.D. program in 1975. It is a source of great pride that she had a hand in establishing the Ph.D. program in nursing for the university.

Over the years, Dr. Swain held a number of roles with the University of Michigan, including chairman of the department of nursing research from 1977 to 1982, associate vice president of academic affairs from 1983 to 1993, interim co-director of personnel from 1986 to 1988, interim director of affirmative action from 1988 to 1989, and interim vice president of student services from 1990 to 1992. Additionally, she gained valuable expertise with the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the University of Virginia School of Nursing, the University of Baltimore School of Law and Wesleyan University.

An expert in her field, Dr. Swain holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from DePauw University, and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in psychology from the University of Michigan. Utilizing her vast array of knowledge, she co-authored "Modeling and Role-Modeling: A Theory and Paradigm for Nursing" alongside H. Erickson and E. Tomlim. In addition, throughout her career, she has contributed to the betterment of her community through the Visiting Nurses Association of Huron Valley and the United Way of Broome County.

For her professional accomplishments, Dr. Swain earned a number of awards, including the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship and features in such publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women. The recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Chardon High School in 2018, she was also named a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of the United States of America in 2007. Looking ahead, Dr. Swain intends to experience the continued success of her career.
