With many years of practiced experience, and giving various workshops and lectures around the world, Mr. Harmon currently serves as the Director of the Regional 3-D Design Center of Excellence and as Head of the Glass Program and Mobile Glass Studio at Keystone College in PA. At the beginning of his career, he worked as an exhibiting artist with work shown at and in the collections of prestigious art museums including: The Museum of American Glass, Contemporary Crafts Museum, Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, The Cooper Hewitt Museum, Honolulu Academy of Arts, and Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Japan. During the time of exhibiting his work he was also teaching at various acclaimed schools and universities: The Gerrit Rietveld Académie in Amsterdam, Lehigh University, New York University, Pace University, Parsons School of Design, Penland School of Craft, Pilchuck Glass School, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Tyler School of Art, and the University of the Arts. Additionally, he has produced several architectural commissions for New York firms Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, Chermayeff & Geismar, Tavern on the Green, the Joyce Theater, and others: Disney Resorts, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, the Ben Franklin Museum, and Architect Maya Lin. His career remains active with being honored with an Artist-in-Residency for the 25th Niijima International Glass Art Festival, in Japan, "50 Forward: 50 Years of American Studio Glass" and "the Art of the Fellowship", at Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, and the only American glass artist awarded an exhibition, (entitled "New Glass with Pyro Drawings), at the Swedish Museum of Glass". In addition, James' work has been published in scores of glass and design books and magazines.
As an expert in his creative field, he initially pursued an education at the Rhode Island School of Design where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He later completed more course work towards a Master in Fine Arts at Illinois State University. One uniquely proud moment of his career thus far has been the restoration of the Corning Museum Innovation Center's 16-foot Mt. Palomar Disk, which he completed alongside Peter Drobney and in cooperation with the International Chimney Corporation (known for moving the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse).
For his professional achievements, Mr. Harmon obtained an American Craft Council "Young Americans" Award, a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Master Craftsman Fellowship, along with Master Fellowships at the NYEGW (now Urban Glass), and two at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center.
Looking forward Mr. Harmon is dedicated to passing on his diverse experiences (working in the fine arts, design, architectural and academic arenas) and expertise to students as a professor, while continuing to delve into an entirely different 21st century technology, 3-D Printing, where he will carry on merging art with technology.
