In 1961, Dr. Bistrian earned a Bachelor of Arts from New York University, following this accomplishment with a Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University in 1965. Cultivating a consistent interest in science, research and people, he went on to earn a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University in 1971, a Doctor of Philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975, and an honorary Master of Arts from Harvard University in 1990. Dr. Bistrian has been a professor of medicine at the Harvard University Medical School since 1990, after having served as assistant clinical professor and associate professor at the university between 1975 and 1990. Starting out as an intern at Cornell University in 1965, he went on to work as a fellow in metabolism and resident in medicine at the University of Vermont before serving his current institution.

Dr. Bistrian is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is certified in internal medicine and was certified for 20 years in critical care medicine. In addition to his primary endeavors, he has served as a lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and as a clinical associate of the physician research resources division for the National Institutes of Health. A prolific writer in his field, Dr. Bistrian has contributed more than 500 science articles to professional publications and was a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition from 1985 to 2007. He has also worked on the editorial board for Critical Care Medicine, Women's Health Watch and the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Dr. Bistrian served the United States Army as captain from 1966 to 1968.

Interested in documenting malnutrition in American hospitals, Dr. Bistrian was one of the first people to show the relation between malnutrition and disease in adults. Notably gaining more than 40 patents in his field, he continues to conduct research in nutrition and biochemistry and is currently working on protein calorie malnutrition, total parenteral nutrition, and nutrition and infection. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Medical Association's Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition, the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition's Cancer's Outstanding Mentor Award, and numerous grants, such as those from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and the National Institute of Arthritis, Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Dr. Bistrian is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Society for Nutritional Sciences. He is also a member of numerous organizations in his field, including the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, the American Society for Nutrition and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, often serving in leadership positions. Dr. Bistrian has been honored in such publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
