Dr. Balz was in private practice as a physician and surgeon in Eugene, OR for 20 years, establishing his practice in 1977. He was chief of staff at Eugene Hospital and Clinic from 1982 until 1984 and Surgery Department Head of Staff at Sacred Heart/Providence Hospital from 1992 until 1994.
In 1997 he joined the U.S. Navy and taught surgery at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, VA, one of the Navy's three teaching institutions. He later became the Fleet Surgeon for the Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln Fleets and was the recipient of numerous military awards, including Surface Warfare and 2 Accommodation medals.
In 2003, after his naval service, he began working for MSF (Doctors without Borders) and served in several countries of this world, thoroughly enjoying such an opportunity. He helped to found a clinic for women and children in Monrovia, Liberia during these years.
Dr. Balz is an elected Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is also a longstanding member of the Northwest Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the American Medical Association and the Oregon Medical Association.
Dr. Balz also has been cited in the first edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the 26th edition of Who's Who in the West. He credits several of his mentors for his accomplishments in the field, including his father, Fredric F. Balz, MD, a former gynecologist, Zdenko F. Danes, Ph.D., and James G. Owen MD, FACS.
Receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at the University of Puget Sound in 1968 and a Doctor of Medicine degree at St. Louis University in 1972, Dr. Balz then completed his Internship, Residency, and Fellowship at Ohio State University Hospitals in Columbus. He has published numerous articles in medical journals, including "Annals of Surgery" and "Review of Surgery".
Dr. Balz has three wonderful children from his marriage to Lynn M. Owen, now deceased, a truly great woman in his life. Now that he is retired, he enjoys riding his motorcycle the world over, interacting with people of completely different histories and cultures.
