Formerly focusing his practice in civil litigation and pre-trial activities, his expertise includes working as an Assistant Corporate Counsel for the City of Buffalo and a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York City. Mr. Hayes additionally built his career as an associate attorney at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind in New York City and Phillips, Lytle in Buffalo.
Actively involved with several professional organizations, Mr. Hayes is notably a longstanding member of the Bar Association of Erie County, the Federal Bar Council and Phi Beta Kappa. Since 2016, he has served on the Board of Directors for the Mt. Olive Development Corporation and he is also a member and the former vice president of the Minority Bar Association. Locally, Mr. Hayes was appointed to the board of directors of New Refuge House, Inc. in Buffalo from 1992 to 2002.
Mr. Hayes was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Tatonka District of the Greater Niagara Frontier Council of Boy Scouts of America in 2015 and was recognized with his family by the Tatonka District in 2018 as Scouting Family of the Year. He was previously honored in 1999 with a Legal Service Award by the Minority Bar Association of Western New York. Likewise, Mr. Hayes has been showcased in the 59th edition of Who's Who in America and the 10th and 13th editions of Who's Who in American Law.
Born in Rochester, N.Y., Mr. Hayes always took an interest in law. While in grade school, he particularly enjoyed the subject of social studies. He notably received a Bachelor's degree at Howard University in 1985 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Yale University in 1988. Mr. Hayes was admitted to practice law by the New York State Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.
