A low temperature chemist and astrophysicist, Dr. Allamandola currently works in the astrophysics and astrochemistry laboratory at the Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA for NASA since 2015. Affiliated with the Center for 35 years, he previously served as a national research council senior associate from 1983 to 1985 and as the founder and the director of the astrochemistry laboratory from 1985 to 2015. Dr. Allamandola also found success in academia as an assistant and associate professor of astrophysics at Leiden University in the Netherlands from 1976 to 1983 and as a research associate in the chemistry department at Oregon State University from 1974 to 1976.

Pioneering the new fields of laboratory astrophysics, astrochemistry and astrobiology, Dr. Allamandola notably identified the main molecules frozen on interstellar grains, comets and planets, which he has since been investigating in terms of their relevance to the origin of life. He has also demonstrated that nano-sized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are ubiquitous in space and play important, but previously unrecognized, roles in astrophysics and astrochemistry. Likewise, Dr. Allamandola has been invited to speak at more than 100 scientific meetings and has presented at over 80 invited colloquia and seminars at universities across the U.S. and Europe.

Dr. Allamandola was a member of many astrophysics, astrochemistry, astrobiology and infrared astronomy advisory panels and councils for NASA between 1988 and 2012, as well as numerous proposal review committees for NASA, the National Science Foundation and other European organizations between 1988 and 2017. Throughout his career, he has chaired, co-chaired and served as the principle organizer for several international meetings. An elected fellow of the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Allamandola is also a longstanding member of the American Astronomical Society, the American Chemical Society, and the International Astronomical Union.

Active locally, Dr. Allamandola spent much of the 1990s participating in youth ministry activities. He has since been volunteering with the Juan Diego Women's Support Center in San Jose, CA since 2014. Born in New York City, Dr. Allamandola earned a Bachelor's degree at Saint Peter's College in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley in 1974.

Listed among the world's most highly cited authors between 1981 and 2001 by the Institute for Scientific Information, Dr. Allamandola notably accepted a 2011 Julien Allen Award for Best Scientific Paper from the NASA Ames Research Center. He has published more than 250 research papers on astrophysics, astrochemistry, astrobiology and infrared astronomy in major professional journals such as The Astrophysics Journal, Astronomy and Astrophysics and The Journal of Chemical Physics. Dr. Allamandola also served as the editor of meeting proceedings for 'Interstellar Dust,' published by the International Astronomical Union in 1989.

Dr. Allamandola obtained a Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Senior Professional in 2014 and an Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal from NASA in 2014. Moreover, he was listed by Time Magazine as one of 25 Most Influential People in Space in the Fall 2012 issue of 'New Space Discoveries,' among other recognitions. Dr. Allamandola has been featured in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 25th and 27th editions of Who's Who in the West.
