Tom's high school yearbook contains this passage: One bright spot for fans was a spectacular 103 yard punt by kicking ace, Tom Bennett. Astounded spectators watched Bennett's booming kick travel from end zone to end zone. At the junior college level, Tom was named the outstanding defensive player in the Junior Rose Bowl. The next year Tom's UCLA football team went to the Rose Bowl. He received the Lamp of Learning trophy for being the football player with the highest grade point average on the UCLA football team during his senior year.
After getting his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from UCLA, Tom went to work at the Hanford Atomic Energy site in Richland, Washington where he worked as a research scientist. His Master's Degree in Nuclear Engineering was awarded by the University of Washington. He worked as a pre-doctoral associate at Washington State University, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. His interest in academics is evidenced by the fact that four of his children have earned doctorates. He contributed many articles to professional journals over the years.
He taught engineering, math, science and computer classes at Big Bend Community College, where he also served as Faculty Association President. During this time period, he also worked as a circuit rider, teaching math, science, and computer classes at 17 high schools within a 100 mile radius of Moses Lake.
His professional achievements include being named an Outstanding Educator of America, being awarded the Key to the City of Long Beach, California, and being featured in two volumes of Who's Who in the West.
Dr. Bennett continues to give back to the community through volunteer church and community work.
