A native of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Dr. Tiger was born in February 1937 to parents Martin and Lillian Tiger. At the inception of his career, he attended McGill University in Montreal, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in 1957 and 1959, respectively. After receiving his degrees, he traveled to Ghana, where he combined his love for social science with the physical sciences and served as an instructor of anthropology at the University of Ghana in Accra in 1960. Relocating to the United Kingdom, he attended the University of London, where he received a Doctor of Philosophy in 1963. Thereafter, Dr. Tiger served as an assistant professor in the departments of anthropology and sociology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, for five years.

Traveling to the United States, Dr. Tiger was employed by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 1969, where he worked as an associate professor of anthropology for five years. Ascending the ranks to full professor of anthropology for an additional 16 years, he has since been serving as a Charles Darwin professor of anthropology since 1990. Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Tiger was a consultant and research director for the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation from 1972 to 1984, chair of the board of social scientists of the U.S. News & World Report from 1986 to 1988 and member of the board of advisors of the George Polk Awards since 2004.

During his tenure, Dr. Tiger has maintained affiliation as a former vice president and treasurer of PEN America, a humanist laureate of the International Humanist Association, and honorary member of the Humanist Canada. He has also been a member of the American Anthropological Association, the Society for the Study of Evolution, the Century Association and the Authors Guild. In addition, Dr. Tiger was a cultural laureate for the New York City Landmarks Preservation Foundation in 1999.

Having authored and co-authored myriad books regarding anthropology, sociology and human nature, Dr. Tiger contributed to the editorial boards of the Social Science Information, Ethology and Sociobiology, and the Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless. He has been honored with fellowships from the government of Quebec, the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Aspen Institute, the Ford Foundation and the Asda Foundation. In light of his accomplishments, Dr. Tiger received the McNaughton Prize in Creative Writing and the W.I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching.
