Dr. McCartney is a retired clinical psychologist and professor emeritus who taught in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL, between 1993 and 2014. In the field for nearly 30 years, he began as a clinical assistant to the chief of the psychiatric unit at Stephansfeld Hospital in Brumath, France, in 1965. He later became a clinical psychologist for the Ministry of Health in Nassau, Bahamas, between 1967 and 1993.
During his tenure in academia, Dr. McCartney was a St. John's College lecturer in the extramural department at the University of the West Indies in the Bahamas from 1968 to 1973 and an adjunct professor at St. Benedict's in the Bahamas from 1968 to 1990. He later served as a consultant in community mental health at the University of Miami from 1975 to 1978 and was a consultant specialist and board of directors for the IPARC in Brazil from 1980 to 1993.
Dr. McCartney is an elected fellow of the International Institute of Integral Human Sciences. He formerly served as a first chairman for the Bahamas Psychological Association in 1990 and was president of the Caribbean Federation for Mental Health in Jamaica. Locally, Dr. McCartney has served on the national task force on AIDS for the Ministry of Health in the Bahamas from 1987 to 1993, was a member of the Commission for Prerogative of Mercy for the Bahamas Government from 1970 to 1984, and was a member of the Bahamas Catholic School Board in Nassau from 1970 to 1993.
An author in his field, Dr. McCartney first published "Neurosis in the Sun" in 1969, followed by "Bahamian Sexuality" in 1971. He also co-authored "Managing Stress and Conflict amid Change" in 2013, among others. Furthermore, Dr. McCartney was the editor for the Journal of the Bahamas Mental Health Association from 1969 to 1971.
The recipient of a Travel Lecturer Award from the Republic of China in 1973, Dr. McCartney has also received several accolades in his field. He first won a Golden Heart Award from the Sir Victor Sassoon Heart Foundation in the Bahamas in 1969, won an award from the U.S. State Department in 1978, received a Gold Medal of Excellence Award in Brazil in 1980 and had a building named in his honor at the Ministry of Health in the Bahamas in 1999. He has been cited in the 57th edition of Who's Who in America.
Born in Nassau, Dr. McCartney was one of eight siblings. His father, who encouraged him to acquire a good education, was a brilliant man who eventually became the assistant commissioner of customs. Dr. McCartney credits his dad for his drive and accomplishments. Dr. McCartney has notably held a bachelor's degree from St. John's University since 1957 and a doctorate, summa cum laude, from the University of Strasbourg in France since 1967. He completed an internship in psychoanalysis at the University of Strasbourg between 1963 and 1967 while pursuing his doctorate and has since become certified in rational behavior therapy through the University of Kentucky in 1980.
Married to his wife Pauline Elizabeth Moysten Silvera since 1962, Dr. McCartney is the father of four children, grandfather of 12 grandchildren and great-grandfather of 13 great-grandchildren. In retirement, he enjoys listening to music, gourmet cooking and collecting fine wine.
