James S. Clegg, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

James S. Clegg was a Fulbright Senior Research fellow at the University of London in England in 1978 and the Ghent University in Belgium in 1999.

Dr. Clegg is a physiologist, biochemist and professor emeritus in the department of molecular and cellular biology in the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute at the University of California, Davis. Teaching on campus since 1986, he also served as the director of the Bodega Marine Laboratory between 1986 and 1998. Some of the courses he has taught have included Physiological Adaptations of Marine Organisms and Advanced Laboratory Topics. He formerly taught biology at the University of Miami from 1964 to 1970 and zoology between 1962 and 1964 and was a research associate biologist at Johns Hopkins University from 1961 to 1962.

An expert in the biochemistry of organisms, specifically extremophiles, which are organisms that live where nothing else can survive, Dr. Clegg also maintains interest in vertebrae extremophiles. Over the years, he has conducted extensive research in comparative biochemistry and biophysics, mechanisms of cryptobiosis, properties and the role of water in cellular metabolism, and cytoplasmic organization. He has contributed articles to various scholarly journals as both an author and editor as well, including in the European Journal of Biochemistry and the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry.

Dr. Clegg is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and past president of the National Association of Marine Laboratories. He is a longtime member of the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology, the American Society for Cell Biology, the Biophysical Society, the Society of Cryobiology and the Cell Stress Society International.
First earning an Associate of Arts in biology from Coffeyville Community College in 1953, Dr. Clegg then received a Bachelor of Science in zoology from Pennsylvania State University in 1958 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biology from Johns Hopkins University in 1962. In between earning his degrees, he served two years in the U.S. Army from 1953 and 1955.

A Fulbright Senior Research fellow at the University of London in England in 1978 and the Ghent University in Belgium in 1999, Dr. Clegg was also a Woodrow Wilson Fellow from 1958 to 1959. He has been included in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1997, as well as over 20 editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West. Married to Eileen Clegg, Dr. Clegg has three children, one stepchild, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
