Supported by nearly 40 years of practiced experience in history education, Dr. McColley desired to study history and literature during his undergraduate studies. Attending Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1954 and Master of Arts in 1955. Soon thereafter, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1960. Subsequent to receiving his doctoral degree, he was employed by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as an instructor in history in 1960. During his tenure, he ascended the ranks to assistant professor, associate professor and full professor, teaching American history. Dr. McColley retired in 1997.

The former chair of the committee for Advanced Placement testing in American history from 1988 to 1990, where he was also a member in 1987, Dr. McColley has maintained affiliation with numerous organizations to remain abreast of developments within his industry. He was a former president of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic and the Illinois State Historical Society, where he also twice sat on the board of directors. Likewise, Dr. McColley was a member of the Organization of American Historians, the Virginia Historical Society, the Chicago Historical Society and the Cliff Dwellers.

Dr. McColley is most renowned for his work as a prolific author and editor. The author of "Slavery and Jeffersonian Virginia," which received the Dickerson Award in 1964, he served as the editor of "Federalists: Republicans and Foreign Entanglements, 1789-1815" in 1969 and the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society from 1998 to 2002, where he subsequently sat on the editorial board from 2002 to 2007. Mr. McColley was also the co-editor of "Refracting America: Gender, Race, Ethnicity and Environment in American History to 1877" in 1993 and served as a longtime classical records reviewer for Fanfare Magazine from 1989 to 2006. In 1986 The University Press of Kentucky published "New Perspectives on Race and Slavery in America: Essays in Honor of Kenneth M. Stampp." Robert H. Abzug and Stephen E. Maizlish, Editors. They has been asked to submit something new; this was not a collection of work previously published. Dr. McColley's contribution is the first of ten essays in the book because its subject was the oldest: "Slavery in Virginia, 1619-1660" a Reexamination."

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. McColley was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the Midwest. Married to the late Diane Laurene Kelsey, he is the proud father of six children and grandfather to seven grandchildren.
