With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Griffen has been retired since 2003, having been the library director of Tucson-Pima Public Library since 1997. Prior to obtaining this role, she was director of the Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries from 1980 to 1996 and deputy library director of the Tucson Public Library from 1974 to 1980. Earlier in her career, she was deputy librarian for staff and program development at King County Library Systems from 1971 to 1974, where she was previously the coordinator of institutional libraries from 1968 to 1971 and area children's librarian from 1965 to 1968. Alongside her primary endeavors, she served as a lecturer at the University of Arizona, Tucson, and the University of Washington.

Ms. Griffen began her career as a student at Pacific Lutheran University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English, cum laude, in 1957. She continued her studies with the University of Washington, where she received a Master of Library Science in 1965. She then joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning an Urban Executive Certificate in 1976. In 1993, she completed a three-week program, earning a second Urban Executive Certificate from Harvard University. Ms. Griffen is a certified librarian in the states of Washington, Maryland and Arizona.

A respected voice in the field, Ms. Griffen has been an active leader in her profession. She is a member of the American Library Association, where she has served on myriad boards and committees, the Arizona State Library Association, and the Maryland Library Association. She has also been affiliated with the Maryland Humanities Council, the Arizona Humanities Council, the Executive Women's Council of Southern Arizona, the National Capital Area Public Access Network and the Arizona Statewide Library Development Committee.

Throughout her career, Ms. Griffen has been recognized for her contributions. The Maryland Association of the Deaf gave her a Helping Hand Award, the Montgomery County Hispanic Employees Association gave her a Certificate of Recognition, and the University of Washington School of Librarianship named her a Henry Scholar. She has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women.
