Swami Karunamoorthy, DSc, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

For the last 41 years, Dr. Karunamoorthy has demonstrated his expertise as an engineer in the areas of aeronautics and astronautics.

For the last 41 years, Dr. Karunamoorthy has demonstrated his expertise as an engineer in the areas of aeronautics and astronautics. In particular, he has performed intensive research on the aeroelasticity of helicopters, two dimensional theories of finite state aerodynamics, micromechanics of composite materials and the kinematics of mechanisms. This research has been lauded by experts in his industry and led to further opportunities in his line of work.

Notably, Dr. Karunamoorthy developed a new set of orthogonal polynomials for the vibration of beams and helicopter rotor blades. Gaining the attention of prominent industry organizations, he has been distinguished as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and as an honorary Commissioner for the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Dr. Karunamoorthy was also selected for inclusion into Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.

Before establishing himself professionally, Dr. Karunamoorthy earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of Madras in Chennai, India, in 1972. Following this accomplishment, he achieved a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology, and Master of Science in aeronautics from the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras, in Chennai, India in 1975 and 1978 respectively. Thereafter, Dr. Karunamoorthy went on to attend Washington University in St. Louis, where he earned a Doctor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1985.

To remain at the top of engineering pedagogy, Dr. Karunamoorthy is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and Pi Tau Sigma, an international honor society for mechanical engineers. Also holding membership with the Vertical Flight Society, he previously served the society as the president of the St. Louis Section, the vice president of the Midwest section and the adviser to the student chapter. In addition, he served as the Chairman of the St. Louis Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and currently serving as a member of the Committee on Engineering Accreditation, an international committee of this society. He also served as chair of the Lichten Award committee for Mid-West region of Vertical Flight Society. Dr. Karunamoorthy's pedagogical work led him in achieving the Vertical Flight Foundation Award from Vertical Flight Society and Faculty Award for excellence in teaching from the St. Louis Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Today, Dr. Karunamoorthy finds success as a professor of mechanical engineering in the department of mechanical engineering and materials science and as the Director of Engineering Accreditation for McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis since 2014. Previously, he served as the professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, a role that he had held since 1986. He had also been the Chairman of the department since 2010. Other noteworthy roles in Dr. Karunamoorthy's career includes associate dean at Saint Louis University, design engineer at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, in Bengaluru, India, and chairman of the accreditation evaluation team to several Universities in the nation and the world.
