Robert Halsall Abel Posthumously Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    HADLEY, MA, March 25, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to posthumously present Robert Halsall Abel with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence.

Mr. Abel commenced his career as a student at The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1964. He attended Kansas State University of Pittsburgh, Kansas, receiving a Master of Arts in English in 1967. Thereafter, Mr. Abel obtained a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Fiction Writing from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1974.

He taught from 1969 to 1972 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL in a special first year program for urban youth and at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, from 1984 to 1986. He traveled to China to be a visiting lecturer at Beijing Normal University in 1987 and to serve in the same capacity at Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1994 and 1997. Mr. Abel was a visiting professor at Vermont College in 2006 in the MFA writing degree program and posted writing curriculum on-line. As a free-lance journalist and editor he published feature articles in the local press on arts, artists and writers.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Abel was a visiting writer and teacher at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, from 1990 to 1993. Throughout his career, he has authored five books, including "Freedom Dues" in 1980, "The Progress of a Fire" in 1985 and "Full-Tilt Boogie" in 1989. He authored "Ghost Traps" in 1991 and "Riding a Tiger" in 1998. Mr. Abel's work has appeared in the Colorado Review, Dim Sum, Glimmer Train, Manoa, the Massachusetts Review, Mind's Eye and the Writers' Forum, among the small press publishers of 40 of the short stories he wrote from over 100.

Mr. Abel received honors as a writer. In 1987 a story won 2nd Prize in the O'Henry Festival stories contest. As a graphic artist, he showed his silkscreen paintings and drawings at local fairs and galleries over decades. He was notably the recipient of the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction in 1989. Earlier in his career, he received a creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978.

Mr. Abel was also featured in the third edition of Who's Who in Entertainment, as well as the 26th and 27th editions of Who's Who in the East and 55th through 58th editions of Who's Who in America.
