Accruing 36 years of teaching experience, Dr. Schrader is retired after completing a long tenure as a professor of history at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN, from 1978 to 2002, first joining the university as an assistant professor from 1966 to 1972. He moved up the ranks to associate professor from 1972 to 1978, also serving the university as the director of the honors program for three years. Dr. Schrader went on to serve as president of the faculty senate from 1992 to 1994.

Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Schrader pursued a formal education at Bellarmine College in Louisville, KY, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He then attended Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany, completing postgraduate coursework between 1962 and 1963. Dr. Schrader went on to obtain a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, in 1966 and 1972, respectively.

Alongside his primary career endeavors, Dr. Schrader has contributed to a number of responsibilities outside of his professional circles. He served as a consultant for the Tennessee Committee for the Humanities from 1974 to 1975 and the Cookeville Arts Council from 1975 to 1980. A prolific writer, he has contributed myriad articles to professional journals. In addition, Dr. Schrader has maintained involvement with a number of organizations related to his field throughout his career. He was president of the Cookeville Toastmasters from 1985 to 1986 and the Tennessee Conference of the American Association of University Professors from 1986 to 1988, as well as an archivist-historian and second vice president for the Southeastern American Society for 18th Century Studies between 1987 and 1999. He was also a chancellor for the Knights of Columbus from 1978 to 1981, among other ranks, a governor general for the First Families of Kentucky from 2015 to 2017, and has served as president of the Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution since 2005.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Schrader was recognized as a Fulbright fellow between 1962 and 1963 and a Woodrow Wilson fellow by the Catholic University of America between 1963 and 1964. He went on to receive a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1978 to 1979, and was twice named an Outstanding Faculty Member by Tennessee Technological University from 1970 to 1971 and again from 1992 to 1993. Dr. Schrader was featured in the fourth edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 23rd and 25th editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
