He also co-chaired the U.S. Magistrate Merit Selection Panel and served as a delegate to Rule of Law and Government Missions to Cuba, Spain, Israel, Taiwan, South Africa and China. Mr. Coulson has been appointed to serve on the board of directors of the Cook County Board of the Regional Transportation Authority in Chicago since 2007.

Writing extensively, Mr. Coulson has published numerous articles in the Chicago Bar Record Magazine, the Dartmouth Law Journal and the First and Fastest Magazine on copyright litigation and various other topics. He recently published "Shortcut to 1944: The Battle of Peleliu" in World War II Magazine in August 2018.

Mr. Coulson is a member and past president of the Federal Bar Association. He is also a longtime member of the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Lincoln Inns of Court and the Dartmouth Club of Chicago.

In 1991, Mr. Coulson briefed, argued and won before the U.S. Supreme Court in Cheek v. the United States. He was also a finalist of the U.S. Senate Judicial Selection Panel for the U.S. District Court in both 1996 and 2000. He received several U.S. Department of Justice Special Achievement Awards between 1979 and 1980, maintains an Avvo.com rating of 10 for his legal career, and has been cited in close to 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Dartmouth College in 1969 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Illinois in 1972, Mr. Coulson was then admitted to the Illinois and Colorado Bar Associations and the Supreme Court of the United States. He also served in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Illinois National Guard in 1965.

Mr. Coulson has been married to his wife Elizabeth A. Shafernich since 1986. When he is not busy at work, he loves to travel with his wife. So far, he has visited 125 countries across all seven continents. He also enjoys reading about history, loves to write, and enjoys art and railroading.
