Gloria Lindsay Hobbs, Ph.D., Litt. D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Since retirement, Dr. Gloria Lindsay Hobbs has remained very active in various projects relating to higher education, mentoring, student scholarships, and volunteering.

D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Hobbs celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. A teacher and administrator for many years, Dr. Hobbs began her career as a foreign languages teacher at St. Philip's College in San Antonio, TX, in 1946. She later accepted an opportunity as an assistant professor of foreign languages at Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern University. While teaching, Dr. Hobbs took a year's leave of absence in 1965 to become an academic administrative intern for the chancellor of the University of Texas System and the dean of the University of Houston. This opportunity led to her serving as one of three representatives of Governor John Connally at the Southern Region Conference on Education in the section on higher education. Over the next three years and during her second leave of absence, Dr. Hobbs helped develop and direct the Women's Job Corps Center program in Texas.

Throughout her career, Dr. Hobbs spent her vacations, holidays and sabbaticals traveling to countries where the foreign languages she taught were spoken, beginning with Haiti, Cuba, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico. She also visited 23 countries in Africa, 14 in the South Pacific, 33 in the Caribbean and the Americas, and 14 in Europe and Asia. Dr. Hobbs devoted her time to publishing articles in various scholarly journals and other publications in her area of expertise as well. Furthermore, she served as an interviewer of doctoral candidates for the Ford Foundation, a judge to select students and faculty to work and study abroad for the State of Texas Fulbright-Hays Committee, was a consultant to the Office of Women in Higher Education of the American Council on Education and served on multiple boards of trustees for such institutions and organizations as Ithaca College, the Edler G. Hawkins Foundation and the Association of Black Women in Higher Education.

Dr. Hobbs is a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Legal Defense Fund, Africare, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She is a charter member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, and is a member of the Leadership Council of the Southern Poverty Law Center, among others. Locally, Dr. Hobbs has been known for her involvement with the Boys Choir of Harlem advisory board of education, the Community Bridge Home Center in Queens, NY, as president, the William Hodson Senior Center and the Pathhseo Soup Kitchen. For her leadership role with the Community Bridge Home, Dr. Hobbs was notably cited by the Queens Borough President, the state assemblyman and the local congressman, and with two proclamations from the City Council of New York in 2008.

A recipient of the prestigious Ellis L. Phillips Internship in Academic Administration Award, Dr. Hobbs was also honored with the naming of the Hobbs Business College after her in Obuasi, Ghana. She was inducted into the Hunter College Alumni Association Hall of Fame, was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award by Ithaca College and was named an honorary member of President Barack Obama's "Kitchen Cabinet." She has been cited in several professional books including the first edition of Who's Who in Texas and in the 27th edition of Who's Who in the East.

Dr. Hobbs received a Bachelor of Arts from Hunter College in 1945 and a Master of Arts from Columbia University in 1946. While in graduate school in Texas, she won the John Hay Whitney Fellowship for Graduate Study and the Southern Fellowship Fund Dissertation Award. She was also the first African American to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree in foreign languages from the University of Texas in 1962. She also holds a Diplôme Mention Très Bien, Université de Paris, 1963. In May 2018, Dr. Hobbs was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, by Ithaca College.

Since retirement, Dr. Hobbs has remained very active in various projects relating to higher education, mentoring, student scholarships, and volunteering. She also enjoys reading, traveling, attending the opera and other musical and cultural events, swimming, and duplicate bridge.
