With nearly thirty years of professional experience Dr. Drake has been retired since 1997, having operated his own private solo medical practice beginning in 1974. Previously Dr. Drake had served in the United States Navy on active duty in Corpus Christi, Texas from July of 1972 until July of 1974 as the chief ophthalmologist at the Naval Air Station there at the rank of lieutenant commander.
Dr. Drake initially embarked upon his professional path at Harvard College, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in 1964. He continued his medical studies at Case Western Reserve University and graduated in 1968 with a Doctor of Medicine degree. He then completed a rotating internship at Hennepin County General Hospital in June of 1969. Afterwards he pursued specialty training in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital from 1969 until 1972.
Having served on several local hospital boards, Dr. Drake has been an active leader in his community. He was president of the Blue Earth County Medical Society from 1997 until 2009. He has served as both a deacon and elder in his local Presbyterian Church, where he was also chairman of its Endowment Committee for seven years. He has served on the institutional review boards of both Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital of the Mankato Mayo Health System and of Minnesota State University-Mankato. He was the first radio reader to the blind from Mankato starting twenty years ago and still reads to the blind.
Throughout his career Dr. Drake has been recognized for his contributions with a number of awards for his achievements. He is a member of the Minnesota Medical Association and diplomate of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology. He was selected for inclusion in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Cementing his legacy as an exemplary medical professional, Dr. Drake hopes to continue enjoying his retirement with his wife, three children, and six grandchildren.
