With more than 50 years of professional scientific administrative experience, Dr. Yates most recently served as a volunteer consultant with the National Institute on Aging and the National Institutes of Health from 2012 to 2018. Presently he is serving as professor of medicine at the University at Buffalo and an emeritus professor of oncology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute since 2012. Prior to this, he national vice president of research for the American Cancer Society from 2002 to 2012 Before that he was senior vice president for clinical affairs at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute from 1987 to 2001. Prior to that position he was the associate director of centers and community oncology at the National Cancer Institute from 1982 to 1987. Earlier in his career, Dr. Yates was a professor of medicine at the University of Vermont from 1974 to 1982 and a research scientist II at Park Cancer Institute from 1970 to 1974.
Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Yates has been an intermittent consultant and reviewer for the National Cancer Institute since 1971, and locally a board member of the Sheehan Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, NY, from 2003 to 2006. Currently he is involved as an external advisor to selected cancer centers. Contributing over 100 scientific papers to professional publications, he is most known for his research in acute leukemia treatment, palliative care and his initiation of the community clinical oncology (CCOP) program at the National Cancer Institute. His early research career resulted in a treatment ("7&3") for acute myelocytic leukemia, which has remained the standard remission induction therapy for the past four decades. He made important contributions to the evaluation of the original 23 hospice demonstration sites and the subsequent regulations developed by the HCFA (now CMS).
Dr. Yates began his career as a student at Lawrence University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. He continued his studies with the University of Illinois, Chicago, completing a Doctor of Medicine in 1965 and being elected to AOA the honorary medical fraternity in 1964. He later continued his studies at the Harvard School of Public Health, earning a Master of Public Health degree in 1981. He is a diplomate of the American College of Medical Executives and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of the American Cancer Institutes (AACI), the National Cancer Center Network (NCCN) and the National Coalition for Cancer Research (NCCR). He served as the president and chairman of the board for both AACI and NCCR.
Throughout his career, Dr. Yates has been recognized for his contributions. The National Cancer Institute gave him the Outstanding Work Performance Award three times 1983 to 1985, and the National Institutes of Health gave him an Award of Merit in 1983 for developing the Community Clinical Oncology Program. Likewise. the Association of the American Cancer Institutes gave him the Outstanding Leadership and Service Award in 2002. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America. Who*s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
