Jonathan Mark Harris, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Jonathan Mark Harris has been a senior research associate and director of the Theory and Education Program at Tufts University Global Development and Environment Institute since 2003.

Dr. Harris has been a senior research associate and director of the Theory and Education Program at Tufts University Global Development and Environment Institute since 2003. He taught in the Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy between 1993 and 2011 and spent two years as a faculty and steering committee member of the Tufts Environmental Literacy Institute for Graduate Students between 1992 and 1994. Dr. Harris also served as a visiting associate professor of environmental studies at Brown University for several years between 2004 and 2012, was a faculty member of the University of the Middle East Project summer certificate program in sustainable development between 2001 and 2004, and held teaching appointments at Boston University, Merrimack College and Regis College. He has been in academia since 1982.

Throughout his career at Tufts University, Dr. Harris has supervised numerous M.A. and Ph.D. student dissertations. At Boston University, he served as a faculty adviser to economics, international relations and environmental studies majors, was a member of the undergraduate instruction committee and the environment studies committee, and directed undergraduate independent work for distinction.

A former board member of the International Society for Ecological Economics, Dr. Harris also twice served on the board of the United States Society for Ecological Economics, and served as President of the USSEE from 2015 to 2017.

Dr. Harris has contributed dozens of articles to various scholarly journals. He is the 2018 author of "Environmental and Resource Economics: A Contemporary Approach," the co-author of "Macroeconomics in Context" and the co-editor of "Twentieth Century Macroeconomics: Responding to the Climate Challenge." Dr. Harris' publication "World Agriculture: Regional Sustainability and Ecological Limits" was nominated for the Herman Daly Award in Ecological Economics in 1997, and his publication "A Survey of Ecological Economics" was cited as the most recommended text in ecological economics on Ecological Society of America list server for 1998.

During the 1988-1989 academic school year, Dr. Harris received an Outstanding Faculty Award from the economics department at Boston University. He has since also been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Inspired by professor and economist Dr. John Kenneth Galbraith while studying at Harvard University, Dr. Harris found his approach to be a broad economic analysis that included social and environmental issues. Deciding to follow Dr. Galbraith's course of study, Dr. Harris earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics, cum laude, in 1971. He then completed a Master of Arts in political economy and Doctor of Philosophy in economics at Boston University in 1981 and 1988, respectively. He served with the U.S. Army between 1969 and 1972.

Married since 1981 to Lowry Elizabeth Hemphill, Dr. Harris is the father of two children and grandfather of one grandchild.
