Supported by more than 20 years of practiced experience in engineering, Dr. Young Kyu Kang has excelled as the principal researcher for Kumho Tire Company, Inc., in Giheung-gu, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, since 2004. In his unique position, he developed the Finite Element Method program for the analysis and design of a smart structural system, conducted research in the active control of noise and vibration of smart structures, tower cranes for building construction, as well as designed a sensing device for a portable tank measuring system. Proud of his development of tire tread patterns and ultra-low rolling resistance tires, Dr. Kang has also conducted the research in tire NVH and tire/road noise, the objective and subjective testing of tire/vehicle performances, OE tires development for global car-makers, and tire/vehicle dynamics.
Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Young Kyu Kang served Kookmin University as a research professor, having also held the same role at Inha University and Pusan National University. After obtaining his doctorate degree, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Manchester and the Pohang University of Science and Technology. Notably, Dr. Kang has earned a Bachelor of Science from Seoul National University, as well as a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Pohang University of Science and Technology.
A contributor of myriad articles to technical journals regarding materials and design, Dr. Kang has authored multiple publications to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Journal, the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, and the Journal of Biomedical Engineering as well. He is a senior member of both the Korean Society for Noise and Vibration Engineering and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Married with three children, Dr. Kang enjoys traveling, mountain climbing, and practicing calligraphy in his spare time.
In light of his exceptional achievements in the field of engineering, Dr. Kang has garnered several accolades and honors. The recipient of the iF Product Design Award and the Tire Technology International Award in 2010, he was also presented with grants and scholarships from the British Council, the Korea Research Foundation, the Pohang University of Science and Technology, and Seoul National University.
