Dr. Kelly is a professor emeritus of French and medieval studies who taught at the University of Wisconsin System in Madison for 37 years. Hired as an instructor in 1962, he progressed to assistant professor in 1964, associate professor in 1966 and full professor in 1970, a position he held until he retired in 1999. Dr. Kelly was also a professor at Julian E. Harris Professor in Madison, Wisconsin, between 1985 and 1999.

Writing extensively, Dr. Kelly authored a number of books and essays, including the more recent "Machaut and the Medieval Apprenticeship Tradition: Truth, Fiction and Poetic Craft" in 2014. He also authored "The Subtle Shapes of Invention: Poetic Imagination in Medieval French Literature" in 2011 and "The Conspiracy of Allusion: Description, Rewriting and Authorship from Macrobius to Medieval Romance," in 1999, among others.

An elected fellow of the Medieval Academy of America since 2017, Dr. Kelly is a member, past international president and longtime honorary president of the International Courtly Literature Society. Furthermore, he is the former vice president and secretary of the International Arthurian Society, where he notably served as the editor of the organization's Bulletin Bibliographique. Dr. Kelly also held membership with International Society for the History of Rhetoric, the Modern Language Association of America and the International Society for the Classical Tradition.

For excellence in his career, Dr. Kelly has been honored with several honors and accolades. Notably, he was presented with the Prix Escalibur Award by French branch of the International Arthurian Society. In light of all his accomplishments, Dr. Kelly has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America.

Originally a philosophy major, Dr. Kelly's interest turned to French and medieval studies and he earned a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 1956. Following this accomplishment, he continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin System, where he obtained a Master of Arts in 1959 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962. Taking his studies even further, Dr. Kelly spent time in France where he immersed himself in both the language and the culture. He also spent a year as Senior Fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Wassenaar, The Netherlands, 1997-1998.
