Mr. Price spent his entire career as an electric power systems engineer working for GE Energy Consulting, and its predecessor organizations, in Schenectady, NY. For the past 12 years, after retiring from full-time employment, Mr. Price has continued as a part-time consultant. Throughout his 50-year career he has always enjoyed the many challenges of using computers to tackle new challenges in power system engineering. Mr. Price has been recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to the computer analysis of large scale power system performance and is now a Life Fellow.
Mr. Price prepared for his professional path by pursuing an education at Clarkson University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1968. After joining General Electric, he continued his studies at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute through the GE Advanced Engineering Course, receiving a Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering in 1971 and becoming a licensed professional engineer in the state of New York. In 1971, Mr. Price was also fortunate to marry the former Donna Lamson who has shared his life ever since and given him two wonderful children, Jennifer and David. Mr. Price was active in several technical committees of the IEEE Power Engineering Society for many years and served as the U.S. representative to an international (CIGRE) study committee on power system analysis and methods. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers for various professional journals, a chapter on "Power System Dynamic Modeling" for the CRC Electric Power Engineering Handbook and was a contributing co-author of the book Least Cost Electric Utility Planning.
Growing up in Johnson City, N.Y., not far from where IBM was established, Mr. Price looked forward to obtaining an electrical engineering degree and then helping design computers for IBM. However, halfway through college, he met a professor, M.S.A.A. Hammam, who encouraged him to go into power system engineering instead. After an interesting summer job in the System Planning Department of New York State Electric & Gas (NYSE&G), he was convinced this was the right path for him. Upon earning his B.S. degree, he obtained a summer job with General Electric, intending to return to Clarkson for graduate school. However, GE offered him a permanent job with the prospect of earning his Masters degree through the GE Advanced Engineering Course. In addition to Prof. Hammam, Mr. Price credits many people for his career path and success, including Clarkson alumnus, Bob Batley, who encouraged him to apply for a full scholarship at Clarkson, which he received, and who introduced him to Clarkson alumnus, Bob MacKenzie, the manager of System Planning at NYSE&G. He is also indebted to his early mentors at GE, F. Paul deMello and Richard P. Schulz, and to his older brother-in-law, Cal Harvey, an IBM technician, who encouraged his early interest in engineering.
Mr. Price has been selected for inclusion in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
