Dorothy Williams Dowdy received the Distinguished Service Award from the Fairfax County 4-H Extension Service as co-founder of Therapeutic Riding.

An accomplished listee, Ms. Dowdy celebrates many years of experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. With more than 35 years of professional experience, Ms. Dowdy is currently retired, having most recently served as a teacher of Advanced Placement United States Government and Comparative Politics with Chantilly High School in Chantilly, Virginia, from 1987 to 1999, where she coached students for "It's Academic" and Harvard Model Congress. In addition to her primary role, she was co-owner and manager of Buckingham Springs Stables in Fairfax Station from 1973 to 1999, a thoroughbred breeding and racing operation, and a government teacher at Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia from 1964 to 1969 and 1983 to 1999. Earlier in her career, Ms. Dowdy was an analyst with the CIA from 1961 to 1962.

Ms. Dowdy began her career as a student at Occidental College in Eagle Rock, CA, and The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she obtained an Associate of Arts in 1959. She continued her studies with the school, completing a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. Following this accomplishment, she joined Tulane University, earning a Master of Arts in Political Science in 1965 with a thesis entitled "Patterns of Communist Revolution." Ms. Dowdy has been certified as a secondary educator in social studies and history in the state of Virginia. After retirement, she pursued Russian language and studies for 30 credit hours at George Mason University.

A respected voice in her field, Ms. Dowdy has been an active leader in her community as well. She is an attendee of the Topical Symposia at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., and president of United Methodist Women at St. George's United Methodist Church. Over the last decades, she has studied portraiture at Patricia MacMahon Rice Studios. Ms. Dowdy has also been affiliated with the Portrait Society of America and Central Virginia Arts.

Throughout her career, Ms. Dowdy has been recognized for her achievements. Chantilly High School named her Teacher of the Year, and she was named Teacher-Leader in 1989 by the People to People Friendship Caravan to Russia. She received the Distinguished Service Award from the Fairfax County 4-H Extension Service as co-founder of Therapeutic Riding. In 2018, she received "Special Mission Recognition" from United Methodist Women. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women. She has been married for fifty five years to practicing attorney T. William Dowdy. They are a family of two daughters, a son, and seven grandchildren.
