With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Cox has been recognized as professor emeritus of the University of Michigan since 2003. Prior to her retirement, she was a professor of physics and engineering at the university from 1988 to 2003, associate professor of physics and engineering from 1976 to 1988, assistant professor of physics from 1971 to 1976, and instructor of physics from 1966 to 1971. In addition to her primary roles, she served as chair of the department of physics and engineering science from 1987 to 1989 and again from 1992 to 1997, and acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1981 to 1982. From 1982 to 1984, she was a research associate with the Crump Institute for Biomedical Engineering, where she was also a research scientist from 1984 to 1987. Earlier in her career, she was a tutor in physics and demonstrator at the University of Oxford in England from 1977 to 1978. She commenced her career at the University of North Dakota, where she served as a lecturer from 1962 to 1966.

Dr. Cox began her career as a student at Albion College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. She then joined the University of Michigan, completing a Master of Arts in 1961. After obtaining some experience in the field, she returned to her studies with the University of California, Los Angeles, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1984. Dr. Cox was a member of the Optical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, where she was president of the Michigan section in 1975, and the Materials Research Society.

Throughout her career, Dr. Cox has been recognized for her contributions. A National Science Foundation grantee, she received the Ralph and Marjorie Crump Prize for Excellence in Medical Engineering in 1984, which she cites as a career highlight. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who of American Women.
