A leading expert in the field, Dr. Kinne has been recognized as chancellor emerita of Jacksonville University since 1994, having been chancellor of the university beginning in 1989. Prior to obtaining this role, she was the president of the university from 1979 to 1989, making her the first female president of a Florida university. During her tenure, she established the Colleges of Fine Arts, Arts and Sciences, and Business, as well as the Nursing School, and Graduate, Aviation, and Executive MBA Programs. Moreover, she founded and served as dean of the College of Fine Arts from 1961 to 1979, making her the first female dean of a College of Fine Arts in the International Council of Fine Arts Deans. Previously, she taught at the university as a professor of humanities from 1958 to 1961.
During her time at Jacksonville University, Dr. Kinne was responsible for many celebrity visits, including Aaron Copland, former President Gerald Ford, George Steinbrenner, and Duke Ellington. Notably, Bob Hope, Charlton Heston, Steve Forbes, and Winston S. Churchill have praised her and written forewords in her book. Steve Forbes described her as a "fascinating person, but also the example it sets for all of us today, particularly women, who at home and at work still seem to have to do more than their male counterparts."
Outside of these endeavors, and as a military wife, Dr. Kinne spent time working in Tokyo Japan as a college professor at Tsuda College. Notably, she created a volunteer post-war education of Japanese students, a program that is still in existence today. Previously, she acted as a recreation director for the Veterans Administration, where she supervised rehab recreation in four hospitals throughout Wadsworth, KS. A World War II U.S. Army Hostess, Dr. Kinne was a camp crowder and director of clubs in Missouri. Earlier in her career, she dedicated her time and effort to teaching music in public schools in Des Moines, IA. As a teenager, she was an instrumental conductor and church choir director in Boxholm, IA, and a public school music teacher as well as choral and orchestra conductor in Kelley, IA. She began her musical efforts as an assistant piano teacher when she was 11 years old.
Dr. Kinne began her career as a student at the University of Northern Iowa, where she obtained an Associate of Arts. She then joined Drake University, completing Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music Education. She continued her studies with the Goethe Universitat in Frankfurt, Germany, graduating cum laude with a Doctor of Philosophy. With a triple major in music, English literature, and philosophy, she wrote a thesis called "A Comparative Study of British Traditional and American Indigenous Ballads," which was published in book form in German and English. In light of her excellence in the field, she also holds honorary doctorates from Drake University, Flagler College, Jacksonville University, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Wagner College, and New York University.
Alongside her primary endeavors, Dr. Kinne is a member of the advisory board of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear at Harvard University, was a member of the Charles Schepens Eye Research Institute, and is an honorary staff member of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, where she was active in the establishment of the Clinic. Likewise, she sat on the advisory council of the National Society of Arts and Letters and was a past chair of the Independent Colleges and Universities. Civically involved as well, Dr. Kinne was active with the Ronald McDonald House, the Eye Research Foundation, the Jacksonville Symphony Association, and the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce.
Demonstrating versatility in her profession, Dr. Kinne has contributed myriad articles to professional journals and authored several books and compact discs. She was the author of "Iowa Girl: The President Wears a Skirt" in 2000 and 2012. In addition, she released a CD titled "Memories," created in memory of Bob Hope in 2004. She has also maintained affiliation with the American Association of University Women, PEO International, the Florida College Music Education Association, Rotary International, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the American Military Retirement Association.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kinne has been recognized for her achievements. Former Mayor Alvin Brown proclaimed November 1st as "Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne Day," and she previously received the Key to the City of Jacksonville by Mayor Hans Tanzler Jr., as well as the Key to the City of Lake City, FL. She received multiple awards by the Florida Publishing Company, including the first Eve of the Decade award, the Arthritis Foundation, the Florida Society of Ophthalmology, and the University of Northern Iowa. She was also inducted into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame and received the Distinguished University Professor Award from Jacksonville University.
During her tenure, Dr. Kinne was also honored with the Leadership Character Inspiration Award from the Turknett Leadership Group, the first and only award to be given by the organization at that time, and Leadership Jacksonville selected Dr. Kinne as the first individual to be filmed by PBS for the Legacy Program in 2012. Furthermore, the American Biographical Institute named her Woman of the Year, and she was presented with the Third Armored Division Award by the commanding general for her work in German-American relations, the first such award to be given to an American at that time.
Dr. Kinne has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women, among many others. She is the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Bartlett. In recognition of her parents' work, the Bertha Bartlett Public Library and Bartlett Museum in Story City, IA, were named in their honor. Similarly, Dr. Kinne has had several buildings and facilities named in her honor, including the university center at Jacksonville University, the alumni and development center at Drake University, and the auditorium at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.
