With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Tuerk has been recognized as professor emeritus of Texas A&M University-Commerce since 2009. Prior to his retirement, he was a professor at the university and its predecessor, East Texas State University, from 1977 to 2009, having been an associate professor from 1972 to 1977. Earlier in his career, Dr. Tuerk was an assistant professor at the University of California, Riverside, from 1967 to 1972.

Dr. Tuerk began his career as a student at Columbia College, obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. He then joined Johns Hopkins University, completing a Master of Arts in 1964. He continued his studies with the university, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967.

A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Tuerk has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of the Modern Language Association, the Society for the Study of the Multiethnic Literature of the United States, the Thoreau Society, and the American Association of Professors of Yiddish. He has also been affiliated with the Popular Culture Association, American Studies Association of Texas, where he served as president in 1993, and the Southwest Texas Popular Culture Association, where he has been serving as chair of fantasy and science fiction since 1995. Dr. Tuerk also served as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America in Commerce from 1976 to 1993.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tuerk has been recognized for his contributions, including having been named a Piper Professor by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation, which he cites as a career highlight. He has also won many local awards from Texas A&M University-Commerce during his tenure and the Special Award from the Society for the Study of the Multiethnic Literature of the United States in 1981. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in American Education.
