A native of Teheran, Iran, Ms. Azarpay arrived in the United States as a student in 1953 where she earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1964 at the University of California, Berkeley, and where she was later appointed to a professorship that lasted over 30 years, until her retirement in 1994. During her time as professor, she also held classes at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum and other institutions on various occasions.

Prior to her focus on Central Asia and Iran, Dr. Azarpay's areas of teaching and research were the history of the arts of Central Asia, China, India and Iran. During her tenure as professor, she authored multiple creative publications including Urartian Art & Artifacts, and Sogdian Painting: The Pictorial Epic in Oriental Art. In 1994 Azarpay was appointed to the editorial board of the Encyclopedia Iranica.

Outside of her professional career, Ms. Azarpay was affiliated with various organizations, including the American Institute of Archaeology, the American Oriental Society, and the Bulletin of the Asia Institute. She has also been the recipient of the Book of the Year Award from the University of California Press, for Sogdian Painting: The Pictorial Epic in Oriental Art, a special publication award of the UC Press. Azarpay has been a recipient of numerous grants from the American Philosophical Society, the UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
