Dr. Morris Eugene Gilliom led the effort to Create a Global Education Program at Ohio State, and he founded the Ohio State University Social Studies Education Program Abroad in 1969.

Dr. Gilliom earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Heidelberg University in 1954 with a major in Social Studies Education and a minor in History. He then served for two years in the U.S. Army as a special agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps. During his military service he was stationed in Germany at the height of the Cold War. Following his discharge from the Army in 1956, Dr. Gilliom taught social studies for two and a half years at John Marshall High School in Cleveland. In 1959 he completed a Master's Degree in Education at The Ohio State University, after which he became an instructor in the College of Education at OSU. He was accepted into Ohio State's doctoral program in Social Studies Education, and he completed his PhD in 1962 with a major in Social Studies Education and a minor in History. His next teaching position was at San Francisco State College in the Department of Education, where he was on the faculty from 1962 to 1965. Dr. Gilliom then served as an assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Chicago before returning to Ohio State as an assistant professor in Social Studies Education in 1966. He progressed to become an associate professor and then professor of Social Studies and Global Education at OSU. He retired from Ohio State in 1995 as Professor Emeritus in the Social Studies and Global Education.
Dr. Gilliom became interested in international matters at a young age, and he has exhibited a lifelong appreciation for other cultures. Growing out of an abiding interest in history and the social sciences, his work with social studies teachers-in-training, and his international experience, he led the effort to Create a Global Education Program at Ohio State, and he founded the Ohio State University Social Studies Education Program Abroad in 1969. Dr. Gilliom has since led a total of eighty-one groups abroad to a total of forty-six different countries, including nineteen trips to China. In addition to organizing and leading study tours abroad for students and faculty members at Ohio State, he has led groups to China for the Smithsonian Institution, the National Council for the Social Studies, and the US-China People's Friendship Association. Following his retirement form OSU as a full time faculty member, he has continued to organize and lead trips abroad, with this most recent trip being to Bhutan in September 2018.
Many of the sixty articles and reviews published by Dr. Gilliom focus on international/global themes, as well as reflections on methods of teaching. Examples include, "Social Studies Teachers and World Citizenship Bridging the Credibility Gap," and "Global Education in the Social Studies." He served as co-author and senior editor of Practical Methods for the Social Studies and Perspectives of Global Education: A Sourcebook for Classroom Teachers. Owing to his contributions to his field, Dr. Gilliom has been honored in such publications as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World. Leaders in Education. Dictionary of International Biography, Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans, Men of Achievement, and Who's Who in American Education.

Awarded The Ohio State University's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1985, Elected a founding member of Phi Bet Delta (OSU)-Honor Society for International Scholars, 1987. Recipient of the Phi Beta Delta Medallion-Special Recognition Award for Contributions Toward Internationalizing the OSU Campus, 1989 and 1993. Inducted into The Ohio State University Academy of Teaching, 1993. Recipient of an Outstanding Alumni Award, Heidelberg University, 2005. Recipient of a Career Excellence Award, Heidelberg University, 2010.
