Anna C. Mullins, Ph.D., RN, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

As a clinical professor at the University of California School of Nursing in San Francisco, Dr. Mullins draws upon four decades of professional experience as a registered nurse. In her career, she has developed and implemented a mentor program for nurses in hospitals with more than 2,000 nurses on staff. She notes that the program was a way to bring together a large staff to create harmony while fostering and encouraging partnership between experienced nurses and those emerging in the field, adding that every nurse deserves a mentor. With a desire to help nurses on an impressionable scale, she is known as a published writer in her field. The number of works she has written exceeds two dozen articles, books and chapters. Her most noteworthy pieces include "Peer Review: Model for Professional Accountability," published by the Journal of Nursing Administration, the Nursing Issues and Nursing Strategies for the Eighties, and the Psychiatric Nursing Administration; "Care for the Caretakers," published by the American Journal of Nursing; and "The California Nurse Mentor Project: Every Nurse Deserves a Mentor," published in Nursing Economic$.

Dr. Mullins' career has been marked by the tremendous impression she has had in each of her roles as a nursing professional. She took her first role as a staff nurse in 1968 for Mayfield Hospital in Kentucky. Thereafter, she was a charge nurse for Unity Hospital in San Francisco, CA, followed by numerous positions as a clinical nurse IV for University of California San Francisco Hospital. As she established her reputation of excellence, Dr. Mullins took on roles with increasing responsibility, including associate director of research and nursing education and director of nursing for the University of California San Francisco Hospital. She was a director of nursing, assistant vice president of patient care services and acting chief operating officer for the Children's Hospital in San Francisco, as well as chief executive officer of the Seton Medical Center and regional president for the Daughters of Charity's California system. And, she served as a senior vice president for Catholic Healthcare West.

At the same time that she was influencing the health care of patients from a clinical perspective, Dr. Mullins was also excelling at the higher education level as an educator and as a consultant. She was an adjunct professor of nursing for San Francisco State University and Holy Names University School of Nursing. She was also a consultant for Valley Care Health System, Washington Hospital and Health System, ALC Healthcare, and the Director of the California Nurses Foundation in Oakland, CA. For the work she has performed in her career, Dr. Mullins was distinguished as Nurse of the Year by the San Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, Woman of the Year by Women Healthcare Executives of Northern California, and Teacher of the Year by the University of California. She also received a Mission Service and Justice Award from United Methodist Women, and a Philosophy in Action Award from the Daughters of Charity.

To prepare for a career in nursing, Dr. Mullins earned an associate degree in nursing from Paducah Community College in Paducah, KY. and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco. Thereafter, she remained at the University of California, where she earned a Master of Science in nursing in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing in 1975. She has remained involved in her professional community through her memberships with the California Society of Nursing Service Administrators and the California League of Nursing. She is also a member of the Nu Xi at Large chapter of Sigma Theta Tau where she served as President Elect, President, Chair of the Research Committee and Chair of the Leadership Succession Committee. She is also a member of the Fellows Committee for the Sigma Theta Tau Foundation.
