James F. Miller, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. James F. Miller has been a professor emeritus in the Department of Geography, Geology and Planning at Missouri State University in Springfield since 2008.

Dr. Miller has been a professor emeritus in the Department of Geography, Geology and Planning at Missouri State University in Springfield since 2008. In academia his entire career, he formerly spent 34 years teaching geology at Missouri State University from 1974 to 2008, one year at the University of Pittsburgh in 1974, one year at Lawrence University in 1973 and three years at the University of Utah from 1970 to 1973.

During his career, Dr. Miller was a voting member for the International Working Group on the Cambrian-Ordovician Boundary for nearly 20 years from 1974 to 1993. He also served as secretary from 1980 to 1993 and a corresponding member from 1993 to 1999. He continues to serve as a voting member for the International Working Group on Cambrian Stage 10 since 2012.

Dr. Miller has conducted extensive research in his field, including on the topics of invertebrate paleontology, micropaleontology, biostratigraphy, chemostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy. He has even had three different species of fossils named after him, as well as one genus of fossil conodont. In addition to his research, Dr. Miller has authored several guidebooks, abstracts and articles in various peer-reviewed journals.

An elected fellow of the Geological Society of America, Dr. Miller is also a longstanding member of the Paleontological Society, the Pander Society and Sigma Gamma Epsilon. Dr. Miller has been the recipient of multiple grants from the National Science Foundation between 1977 and 1992, as well as several faculty research grants from Missouri State University since 1975 and a foundation grant from Missouri State University in 1984. Furthermore, Dr. Miller received a Gilbert Harris Award from the Paleontological Research Association and has been cited in the second edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.

While in college, Dr. Miller happened to take a general geology class to fulfill a college requirement and loved it. Attracted to the historical aspect of the subject, earth history and fossil record ever since, he later earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Augustana College in 1965. He then completed both a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin in 1968 and 1971, respectively. He is a registered geologist in the state of Missouri. Married to his wife Louise L. Miersch since 1967, Dr. Miller is the father of two children, Jason and Michelle.
