Mr. Crate is a spiritual care coordinator for Northern Light Health, a healthcare organization with locations all over Maine. Taking on his new role in 2019, he is responsible for providing emotional and spiritual counseling to patients, typically those in hospice. He has also been a consultant in his field since 2013. Boasting an extensive background in the field, he more recently held appointments as a vocational rehabilitation consultant for Aetna and the Maine Department of Labor. Mr. Crate notably studied rehabilitation psychology, eastern mysticism and meditation in college.

In previous years, Mr. Crate worked as a counselor for an emergency shelter, the activities director for a home school farm and in various other roles leading up to his time in rehabilitation and counseling. Additionally, he taught as an adjunct instructor at Kennebec Valley Community College in Maine, Thomas College in Maine and the Ultimate Medical Academy in Florida. Teaching courses in psychology, sociology and the vocational aspects of disability, Mr. Crate has also spent time working as a substitute teacher.

Mr. Crate is a member and past president of the private sector division of the National Rehabilitation Association. He is also a member of the consumer division of the Better Business Bureau and Rotary International and has served his local community as a founding board member of the Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA of Greater Waterville at the Alfond Youth Center. Since 2001, he has been an advisor for both organizations. Mr. Crate is also the chair of the Waterville City Council, a past vice president of the Opera House Association and a former trustee of the Kennebec Water District.

In addition to his primary career responsibility, Mr. Crate co-authored "I Lost My Job, Now What Do I Do?" in 1990 and spent many years as a syndicated columnist for The Changing Workplace. Currently, he maintains his own blog at www.stevecrate.org.

For excellence in his career, Mr. Crate has been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades over the years. Impressively, he has been an elected fellow of the Notre Dame Catholic Leadership since 2018. In light of all his accomplishments, Mr. Crate has also been named to over 15 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Originally planning to serve in the military, Mr. Crate suffered an eye injury as a teenager and instead decided to pursue a career where he could help rehabilitate others. Receiving an associate's degree from the University of Maine at Augusta in 1977, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1980. Completing postgraduate coursework at Northeastern University in Boston in 1981 and at Thomas College in 1991, he obtained a Master of Public Administration from the University of Maine in Orono in 2004. A vocational evaluation specialist and case manager, he has held a Catholic Leadership Certificate from the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame since 2018. Previously, Mr. Crate held certification as a rehabilitation counselor from 1987 to 2007

Ordained as a lector, cantor and sub-deacon in the Maronite Catholic Church since 2010, Mr. Crate became ordained after meeting his lovely wife, a Lebanese woman, and converting his religion. Passionate about public service, he also finds great enjoyment in the study of Antiochean Maronite liturgy and chants, as well as the history of Eastern Christianity. Mr. Crate has been happily married to his wife, Allison Catherine Ferris, since 1975 and is the proud father of two sons.
