Martha A. Saunders, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Martha A. Saunders won the Women Making History in Education Award from the West Georgia National Organization of Women.

Saunders, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Saunders celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. After accruing more than 40 years of practiced experience in academia, Dr. Saunders retired from her role as a professor at the University of West Georgia in 1995, where she also worked as an instructor from 1965 to 1974, assistant professor from 1974 to 1985, and associate professor from 1985 to 1993. At the inception of her career in the early 1950s, she joined Auburn University in Alabama, remaining there for two years as a graduate teaching assistant.

Over the years, Dr. Saunders gained valuable expertise through educational roles with Ohio Northern University as an instructor from 1954 to 1955, the Fort Hawkins School as a teacher from 1955 to 1956, and Talbot County High School as a teacher from 1956 to 1957. Since her retirement, she has focused on giving back to her local community through the Carrollton Lit-Mu Club, the Sixth District of the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs and the Carrollton Civic Woman's Club, where she served as second vice president, first vice president and president between 2000 and 2006. Likewise, she formerly served as president of the Georgia League of Women Voters and the Carroll County League of Women Voters.

An expert in her field, Dr. Saunders holds a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University, a Master of Arts from Auburn University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Georgia State University.

In light of her outstanding work in the field, Dr. Saunders won the Women Making History in Education Award from the West Georgia National Organization of Women and the Woman of Achievement Award from the Business and Professional Women of Carroll County. She has also received various club awards through her civic affiliations, such as the Humanitarian Award from the Carrollton Sertoma Club and the Thanks Badge from the Pine Valley chapter of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, and the J. Owen Moore Faculty Award from the University of West Georgia National Alumni Association. In addition, she was honored in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, published in 1992.

Married to the late C. Vann Saunders for several decades, Dr. Saunders is the proud mother of three children and grandmother of one grandchild. In her spare time, she enjoys exercising and volunteering in her local community. Looking ahead, Dr. Saunders intends to continue enjoying her retirement.
