Carolyn Merchant, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Carolyn Merchant has been the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, and the Nathan Cummings Foundation.

An educated and qualified individual in her profession, Dr. Merchant obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, in 1958. Subsequently, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she secured a Master of Arts in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967. Shortly thereafter, she began her career with the University of San Francisco, progressing from an assistant professor to an associate professor between 1969 and 1978. Furthermore, she excelled with the University of California, Berkeley, also progressing from an assistant professor to a full professor from 1979 until her retirement in 2018.

Throughout her career, Dr. Merchant has worked as a lecturer and consultant in the field. These appointments include the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, CA, the department of conservation and resource studies with the University of California, Berkeley, as well as serving as a visiting professor and fellow for École Normale Supérieure and Murdoch University, respectively. A published author since 1980, her written works include "The Death of Nature: Women, Ecology and the Scientific Revolution," "Ecological Revolutions, Nature, Gender and Science in New England," "Radical Ecology: The Search for a Livable World," "Earthcare, Women and the Environment," and "Science and Nature: Past, Present, and Future," among others.

To remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Merchant is affiliated with a number of professional organizations, including the West Coast History of Science Society, the American Society for Environmental History, and the Society of Woman Geographers. As a testament to her accomplishments, she has been the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, the California Council for the Humanities and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Merchant is also a Fulbright Senior Scholar, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, a National Humanities Center Fellow, and an American Council of Learned Societies Fellow.

Dr. Merchant is especially inspired by and proud of her sister Dr. Ann Merchant Boesgaard, who is an astronomer at the University of Hawaii. Dr. Boesgaard received the 2019 Henry Morris Russell Leadership Award in Astronomical Research from her lifetime eminence in astronomical research.
