Prior to his current role, he worked as the head of the directing program and an associate professor at Western Illinois University from 1989 to 1996 and an assistant professor at Buena Vista College from 1986 to 1989. Earlier in his career, Mr. Johanson found success as an assistant professor at Concordia College from 1984 to 1986 and an instructor at Aquinas High School from 1973 to 1977.

Mr. Johanson initially pursued an education at Iowa Lakes Community College, where he obtained an Associate of Arts in 1970. He continued his studies at Wayne State College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. Mr. Johanson concluded his academic efforts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in 1983.

A respected voice in his areas of interest, Mr. Johanson has been an active leader in his community. He is a member of Mid-America Theatre Conference, the Dramatists Guild of America, the Chicago Dramatists, and the Playwrights Center of Minneapolis. Throughout his career, he has been celebrated for his contributions with awards and accolades. Likewise, Mr. Johanson has been featured in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Entertainment and Who's Who in the Midwest.
