Supported by 25 years of educational experience, Dr. Smith currently works as a tenured professor at Washburn University, where he teaches graduate classes in social work clinical practice, advises undergraduate and graduate students regarding classes and scheduling, and maintains a scholarship and research program. At the beginning of his career in the late 1980s, he initially served Kansas State University as an adjunct professor in anthropology, sociology and social work. Over the years, Dr. Smith found success through his work in academia with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, Washburn University, and the University of Wyoming.
Dr. Smith additionally excelled in social work as a marital and family therapist through the Alliance for Growth: Counseling & Consulting LLC and the Psychology Clinic, LLC. Additionally, he lent his considerable knowledge to the U.S. Army in executive positions in community mental health, human resources, family support and social work services. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Smith is affiliated with the Academy of Certified Social Workers, the National Council of African American Men, the Society of Spirituality in Social Work and the National Association of Social Workers.
An expert in his field, Dr. Smith has earned a Bachelor of Arts from Hampton University, a Master of Arts in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Arts in public administration from the University of Laverne and a Doctor of Philosophy from Kansas State University. Throughout his career, he authored and co-authored articles such as "Social Work Standards Competence: A Model for Global Community Engagement," "Development of Emotional Intelligence in First-Year Undergraduate Students in a Frontier State" and "The Change Agency of Emotional Connectedness: The Link Between Emotions, Emotional Intelligence and Spirituality." Along with other scholars, Dr. Smith was featured in a number of publications, including the Journal of Social Work Values and Ethics and the International Journal of the Humanities.
Due to his outstanding work in the field, Dr. Smith was inducted into Phi Beta Delta, the Honor Society for International Scholars, Phi Alpha, the Social Work Society and National Society of Scabbard and Blade (Military Honor Society), Hampton University, Initiated 03/08/75, and was selected for inclusion in Madison Who's Who of Executives and Professionals, Who's Who Among American Teachers & Educators, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America and Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals. Within the military, he was presented with a Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster in 1982 and 1993, two Army Achievement Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, and an Armed Forces Reserve Ribbon, among others. Looking toward the future, Dr. Smith intends to retire, but still teach in a limited capacity at Washburn University.
