The former president and founder of REF Associates in Pittsburgh, Dr. Fidoten retired in 2008 after 19 years of running his organization. He also worked as an associate professor of communication at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pa. between 1989 and 2008. Prior to and during his tenure at Slippery Rock University, Dr. Fidoten served on the board of visitors for the School of Business from 1988 to 1991.
Beginning his career in library science in 1950, Dr. Fidoten later pivoted his professional path toward the aerospace industry and military defense before launching a 25-year career in the commercial industry. Hired by PPG Industries Glass Research in Pittsburgh in 1964 as the manager of research and staff services, he then found success as the director of information systems for the Glass Division between 1971 and 1989. During that time, Dr. Fidoten excelled in what was then known as the glass division of the company, operating at the corporate headquarters.
During his tenure, Dr. Fidoten consulted for Vernante Pennitalia SPA in Genoa, Italy, and Boussois, S.A. in Paris, France. He also notably held the post of chair for the International Commission on Glass Congress in 1980. Involving scientists from around the world, the event ran for one week, included approximately 800 attendees, and was the very first time that scientists came from the Soviet Union and East Germany with an American astronaut as the keynote speaker.
Dr. Fidoten is a past president of the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Society of Information Science and the Office Systems Research Association. He was active as a longtime member of the International Interactive Communications Association of Pennsylvania, and the International Commission on Glass. Locally, he was affiliated as the president of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Board of Education in New York, the civil service commissioner of O'Hara Township in Pennsylvania and a committee member of the Sierra Club of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh. In recent years, Dr. Fidoten contributed as a board member of the Pittsburgh chapter of the National Society of Arts & Letters from 2012 to 2017.
Honored with a Presidential Citation by the American Ceramic Society in 1980, Dr. Fidoten was soon after recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Pittsburgh in the School of Library and Information Science in 1981. He has been selected for inclusion in 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the East. Previously, Dr. Fidoten earned a Bachelor's degree from New York University in 1949, a Bachelor of Library Science from the Pratt Institute in 1950 and a Doctor of Philosophy in information science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970.
