Lloyd Ultan Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Currently recognized as a distinguished professor for scholarship and research at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Lloyd Ultan has been the Bronx Borough Historian since 1996.

An accomplished listee, Mr. Ultan celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Mr. Ultan earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Hunter College in 1959 and a Master of Arts from Columbia University in 1960. He began his career in the Edward Williams College at Fairleigh Dickinson University, holding the ranks of an associate, an assistant professor, and an associate professor. Since 1981, Mr. Ultan has excelled as a professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

During this time, Mr. Ultan has found success as a consultant in his field and a guest lecturer at numerous institutions, including Herbert H. Lehman College, Bronx Community College, the College of Mount Saint Vincent, the City College of New York, Fordham University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, among others. Interested in history from a young age, he has succeeded in his field due to a desire to share knowledge with others as well as the support from family and colleagues. After studying the history of the United States and several other countries, he decided to explore the history of the Bronx, where he grew up. A celebrated educator, Mr. Ultan is particularly proud of the encouragement he was able to give a particularly bright student who had been discouraged earlier in his academic career.

Currently recognized as a distinguished professor for scholarship and research at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Mr. Ultan has been honored by several professionally-relevant organizations throughout his career's duration. He is an honorary member of Neumann-Goldman Post No. 69, and he has been inducted into the Bronx Jewish Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement. Moreover, Mr. Ultan has received several certificates in his field, among numerous other instances of recognition.

The Bronx Borough Historian since 1996, Mr. Ultan has also contributed to his community as the president of the 91 Van Cortlandt Owners Corp, a founder of the Bronx Council on the Arts and a member of the board of directors for the National Shrine of the Bill of Rights. Other organizations and committees he has been involved with include the Historic Preservation Committee of St. Ann's Episcopal Church, the Bronx Borough President's Bicentennial Advisory Committee, the Bronx Day Commission and the Bronx Civic League. Mr. Ultan has served the Bronx County Historical Society in several capacities, including as the president.

Mr. Ultan's creative contributions to his field are numerous, and include "The Bronx County Building's Historical Murals: An Artistic Legacy," "The Northern Borough: A History of the Bronx" and "Presidents of the United States, Volume VI of Roots of the Republic." He also co-authored such works as "A Historical Sketch of the Bronx" and "The Bronx: The Ultimate Guide to New York City's Beautiful Borough." A prominent scholar in his field, Mr. Ultan has participated in symposia and panel discussions for the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the State University of New York Empire State College, the Southern New York State Symposium on the Bronx River, Saint Ann's Episcopal Church and the 125th anniversary of the Bronx Park System.

From 1992 to 1993, Mr. Ultan excelled as a vice president of the Teaneck chapter of the American Association of University Professors and the secretary of the Council of Fairleigh Dickinson University chapter of the American Association of University Professors. He has also been involved with such organizations as the New York City Committee on Cultural Concerns, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs' Program Guidelines Committee, the New York Historical Society and the American Historical Association. A member of Sigma Lambda, Alpha Chi Alpha and Phi Alpha Theta, Mr. Ultan was appointed to the New York City Mayor's Task Force on Spontaneous Memorials in 2002.

Demonstrating considerable knowledge and professional expertise, Mr. Ultan has accepted a number of awards, including Fairleigh Dickinson University's 50-Year Award in 2014, Bissel Gardens' Award of Honor in 1999, the Bronx County Historical Society's Edgar Allan Poe Award for Literary Excellence in 1996, the Bronx Landmarks Education Award in 1995 and Edward Williams College's Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 1994, among several others. He was also selected for inclusion in the Alumni Association of Hunter College Hall of Fame in 1974 and was presented with a New York State Regents college teaching fellowship in 1959. Due to his considerable professional contributions, Mr. Ultan has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
