Lamadrid, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Lamadrid has enjoyed a distinguished career at the University of New Mexico, since 1985. He has served as the Querencias Series editor of the University of New Mexico Press since 2014, director of Chicano Hispano Mexicano Studies from 2004 to 2009, and chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese from 2009 to 2014, where he holds the rank of Distinguished Professor Emeritus. Prior to obtaining these roles, he taught at Northern New Mexico College from 1979 to 1985. He began his career as an assistant professor at the University of Oregon from 1976 to 1979. Throughout his career, he has been active in international education, and has taken many hundreds of students to Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain. He is a co-founder of the renowned Conexiones program, recognized for excellence in experiential curricula and for what he defines as the "pedagogy of culture shock" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Dr. Lamadrid began his career as a student at the University of New Mexico, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1970. He then joined the University of Southern California, completing a Master of Arts in Spanish in 1976. He continued his studies there, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Spanish in 1978.

A respected literary folklorist, Dr. Lamadrid has been an active leader in his community and a member of the American Folklore Society and the Historical Society of New Mexico. He has served as a curatorial consultant for the Smithsonian Institution, the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, the Museum of New Mexico, and was appointed to the New Mexico Cuarto Centenario Commission. He was a Chatauquan for the New Mexico Humanities Council for many years. He has authored and edited many books, chapters, and articles in his area of research, including Tesoros del Espiritu: A Portrait in Sound of Hispanic New Mexico (1994). With a Library of Congress Award; Nuevo Mexico Profunda: Rituals of an lndo-Hispano Home land (2000), Southwest Book Award; Hermanitos Comanchitos: Indo-Hispano Rituals of Captivity and Redemption (2003), Chicago Folklore Prize; Hotel Mariachi: Urban Space and Cultural Heritage in Los Angeles (2013), International Latino Book Award; and Naci6n Genizara: Ethnogenesis, Place, and Identity in New Mexico (2019). He has also authored several prize winning bilingual children's books, notably Juan the Bear and the Water of Life (2008), and Amadito and the Hero Children (2011).

Throughout his career, Dr. Lamadrid has been recognized for his achievements. He has held fellowships with Fulbright, Rockefeller, and Smithsonian. He has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including the 27th edition of Who's Who in the West®.
