Lucy Hendrick Kernodle Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Lucy Hendrick Kernodle devoted her career to serving others as a nurse in a number of settings.

An accomplished listee, Ms. Kernodle celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Retiring in 2014 after more than 25 years of experience, Ms. Kernodle devoted her career to serving others as a nurse in a number of settings. Most recently, she excelled as a school nurse with the Alamance-Burlington Schools in North Carolina from 1990 to 1996; in 1996 when the two school systems in Alamance County merged and became Alamance Burlington School System, she carried out the duties of lead school nurse until her retirement. Previously, she worked as a pediatric orientation coordinator for Alamance County Hospital in Burlington and a generalized public health nurse for the Metropolitan Health Department in Nashville, Tenn., beginning in 1969. Furthermore, Ms. Kernodle remained active in her community through volunteer and charitable work.

After she held the post of a public health nurse, Ms. Kernodle found success as Pediatric Orientation Co-ordinator with Alamance County Hospital and Alamance Regional Medical Center. Her accomplishments gained the attention of the Student Services Director within the local school system who invited her to join the School Health Advisory Council. Notably, Ms. Kernodle was the first school nurse ever to be hired in the county by a school board on February 1, 1990.

During her career, Ms. Kernodle maintained involvement as a member of the woman's health steering committee for the Alamance Regional Medical Center between 1994 and 2001. She was further active on the Healthy Alamance Substance Abuse Task Force and the Health Alamance Asthma Coalition since 1996. Moreover, Ms. Kernodle has been a member of the Alamance-Caswell Medical Auxiliary in Alamance County since 1976 and was a past president of the School Nurse Association of North Carolina in 1999-2000.

Influenced by her parents, who both worked in healthcare, Ms. Kernodle pursued an education at Duke University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1969. She then became a registered nurse in 1969 and an ANCC Certified School Nurse in 1990. Ms. Kernodle is associated with the Professional Educators of North Carolina, the American Nurses Association and the National School Nurses Association.

Since her retirement, Ms. Kernodle was appointed to the board of the Alamance County Children's Museum, a post from which she finds much enjoyment. Likewise, she is moderator for Presbyterian Women and the First Presbyterian Church-Burlington since 2018. Ms. Kernodle's involvement with the church dates back to 1977, where she has served many years as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, youth advisor and as a past member and chairman of the Christian Education Committee.

The recipient of a North Carolina Asthma Champion Award by The Asthma Alliance of North Carolina in 2010, Ms. Kernodle also accepted a Public Health Partnership Award in 2009. She was additionally celebrated as School Nurse of the Year by the North Carolina School Nurses Association and an Outstanding Volunteer by the Substance Abuse Task Force in 2001. Ms. Kernodle has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
