Theresa "Tracy" K. Jarman Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Theresa "Tracy" K. Jarman received a Mayor George Moscone Memorial Award in 2009 and was named Woman of the Year for 2008 by the State of California Legislature.

A retired fire chief, Ms. Jarman led a wonderful career in public service with the San Diego Fire Department for nearly 30 years. Retiring in late 2009, she then spent another nine years as a San Diego Foundation board member for the San Diego Regional Disaster Fund between 2010 and 2018. Working her way up the ranks within the department, Ms. Jarman was initially recruited in 1983 and has since performed nearly every position within the department, including captain, battalion chief, deputy chief and assistant fire chief. In 2006, Ms. Jarman accepted the position of fire chief, serving for four years.

The first female fire chief to ever serve San Diego and one of about a dozen female fire chiefs to serve across the United States, Ms. Jarman ran the second largest department, administering a department of 1,200 employees and a budget of over $195 million. She was notably one of approximately 30 other applications.

While serving as fire chief, Ms. Jarman fought the 2007 wildfires of southern California, which destroyed over one million acres and sparked several megafires. She was named to the Governor's Blue Ribbon Task Force following those wildfires and to FEMA Region IX's regional advisory council. In previous years, Ms. Jarman spent two years as a plans officer for the Urban Search and Rescue in San Diego from 1996 to 1998. She also served as director of communications for the San Diego Fire and Line Safety Services and the San Diego Medical Services Enterprise from 1998 to 1999. Throughout her career, Ms. Jarman has been a longstanding member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the National Fire Information Council and the Women in the Fire Service.

The recipient of several awards for her career, Ms. Jarman more recently received a Mayor George Moscone Memorial Award in 2009, was named Woman of the Year for 2008 by the State of California Legislature and was named Fire Chief of the Year by California Fire Chiefs Association in 2008. She received two grants, a U.S./Mexico Innovative Technical Assistance grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1993 to 1995 and a local emergency planning committee grant from the California Environmental Protection Agency from 1993 to 1995. Ms. Jarman has been cited in the 56th edition of Who's Who in America and the 18th edition of Who's Who in the World.

Ms. Jarman holds a Fire Science Degree, as well as a Bachelor of Science in biology and Master of Arts in public administration from San Diego State University. She is a certified state fire officer and certified hazardous materials specialist. Born and raised in Escondido, CA, Ms. Jarman enjoys staying active by hiking, kayaking and golfing.
