Penny Jane Gilmer, PhD, DSc, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Penny Jane Gilmer is the Nancy Marcus professor emerita in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at Florida State University.

The Nancy Marcus professor emerita in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at Florida State University (FSU), Dr. Gilmer began her teaching career at FSU as an assistant professor chemistry in 1977. She later served this esteemed academic institution as an associate professor, the interim associate dean of the college of arts and sciences and the associate chairman of chemistry, eventually accepting the post of a full professor in 1996. Prior to her tenure at FSU, Dr. Gilmer found success at Stanford University as a Bank American-Giannini postdoctoral fellow, a U.S. Public Health Service and National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow, and an acting assistant professor of human biology.

Since retiring, Dr. Gilmer has excelled as the principal investigator at FSU in 2009 on a National Science Foundation advance-paid grant through the Alliance for the Advancement of Florida's Academic Women in Chemistry and Engineering (AAFAWCE). Working for one of five universities statewide that is affiliated with the project, the AAFAWCE team collaborated to edit a book called "Alliances for Advancing Academic Women: Guidelines for Collaboration in Chemistry, Engineering and Beyond," published in 2013 through Sense Publishers. Dr. Gilmer was the senior editor of this book. Dr. Gilmer has also maintained her involvement as a senior personnel member in science with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Gilmer has also authored "Transforming University Biochemistry Teaching Using Collaborative Learning and Technology: Ready, Set, Action Research!" and co-edited Dr. Hedy Moscovici's book "Learn Science, Learn Math, Learn to Teach Science and Math, Homo Sapiens!" with Dr. Katherine Wieseman. She has penned approximately 80 articles and monographs published various peer-reviewed journals, in addition to chapters for several books.

An elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Gilmer has been affiliated as a member, a former board member, the president-elect and the president of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching. Likewise, she has been associated with the Southeastern Immunology Conference as a member, the past president and a former director, the Zonta Club of Tallahassee as a member and the past president, and Zonta International as an area four director in district 11. Furthermore, Dr. Gilmer is a longtime member of the Association of Women in Science, the Audubon Society, the American Chemical Society, the Federation of Biological Chemists and the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE), among other organizations.

Honored with numerous awards, Dr. Gilmer was notably presented with a Trailblazer Award from the Oasis Center for Girls and Women in 2015, a John Shrum Award from the Southeastern Association of Science Teacher Education in 2007, the First Annual GK-12 Dissemination Award for Distinguished Accomplishments in the Dissemination of the GK-12 Program in 2006 and the Outstanding Science Teacher Educator Award from the ASTE in 2006. She also received a Teaching Incentive Award from Florida State University from 1993 to 1994. Garnering more than 25 grants from such organizations as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, Dr. Gilmer has been selected for inclusion in more than 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who of American Women.

A master gardener certified by the Leon County Extension Office, Dr. Gilmer pursued an education at Douglass College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1965. She continued her studies with a Master of Arts in organic chemistry in 1967 at Bryn Mawr College. Following these accomplishments, she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972. Dr. Gilmer concluded her academic efforts at Curtin University in 2004, graduating with a Doctor of Science in science education.
