Thomas Scott Klinger, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A tenured professor and graduate coordinator at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania, Dr. Klinger first became a faculty member on campus in 1985. Becoming a full professor in 1996, he has taught various courses, including Human Sexuality, Concepts in Biology and Marine Invertebrates. Prior to teaching at Bloomsburg University, he was an adjunct professor at Saint Leo College in Florida between 1984 and 1985 and an adjunct lecturer and teaching assistant at the University of South Florida between 1976 and 1984.

Dr. Klinger's research interests have included invertebrate zoology, marine biology, animal nutrition, physiological ecology and behavioral ecology. He has been involved with investigations related to the functional aspects of invertebrate zoology, most of which have focused upon physiological, behavioral and ecological aspects of nutrition of echinoderms. In more recent years, he has emphasized his research on the impacts of climate change, particularly elevated sea surface temperatures and ocean acidification. Dr. Klinger was also responsible for his research in the characterization of the digestive enzymology of sea urchins, quantification of nutritional energetics and the behavior ecology of sea urchins and sea cucumbers.

During his academic career, Dr. Klinger was a curriculum consultant for the Sarasota County Schools in Florida and an instructor at the Pasco-Hernando State College in New Port Richey, FL, in 1984. He was vice president of academics at the Marine Science Consortium on Wallops Island, VA, from 1988 to 2003.

Dr. Klinger authored a chapter in the book "The Edible Sea Urchins: Biology and Ecology." He has contributed articles to several scholarly journals and has served on the editorial board of "American Zoologist" between 1998 and 2004 as well.

A member and former vice president of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania University Biologists, Dr. Klinger is also a longtime member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the American Society of Zoologists, the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, and Sigma Xi. Locally, Dr. Klinger served on the board of directors for the Girl Scouts of the United States of America in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Klinger received several grants over the years, including from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education between 1987 and 1996 and the National Science Foundation in 1998 and 2000. In 2018, his students at Bloomsburg University honored him with a Distinguished Professor Award in 2018. He has been cited in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the sixth edition of Who's Who in American Education. Dr. Klinger notably received both a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in biology from the University of South Florida.
Born in Kalamazoo, MI, Dr. Klinger grew up with two wonderful parents. His mother was a very intellectual woman who was extremely encouraging. His father was an accomplished musician. Married to Signe Dolloff ii 1987, Dr. Klinger and she share two beautiful children, Austin and Pepin.
