SARASOTA, FL, April 29, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Herbert Silverstein has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After serving as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and a staff otolaryngologist with Tripler General Hospital, Dr. Silverstein has found much success in the field of neurotology. Over the years, he has excelled as a clinical instructor in otolaryngology for Harvard Medical School, where he also held the post of a teaching fellow. Additionally, he was affiliated with the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. Today, Dr. Silverstein serves as the president and the founder of the Silverstein Institute and the Ear Research Foundation in Sarasota, Florida.

Internationally renowned as a leading authority on Ménière's disease, understanding both the biochemistry of the disease and the surgical developments to treat it, Dr. Silverstein developed the microsurgical posterior fossa vestibular neurectomy, which relieves a patient's vertigo attacks while preserving their hearing. As an innovator in the field, he also created a new procedure for otosclerosis to free to frozen stapes bone, the Laser Stapedotomy Minus Prosthesis, which doesn't require prosthesis to restore the patient's' hearing. He developed a Facial Nerve Monitor which helps ear surgeons from injuring the facial nerve during ear surgery and invented the permanent aerating tube (SPAT) that is placed though the bone of the ear canal that prevents injury to the ear drum. He also invented the MicroWickR, a device that allows the patient to instill medication to the inner ear for treating sudden deafness and Meniere's disease. EarKareR was developed as a 2 second ear wash that reduces ear wax accumulation and is sold on Amazon. More recently, Dr. Silverstein developed the round and oval window reinforcement procedure for treating Hyperacusis, which is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the sound vibrations to the stapes and round window membrane. After surgery, many patients can tolerate normal sounds and resume normal lives.

Board certified through the American Board of Otolaryngology, Dr. Silverstein has earned a Bachelor of Science from Dickinson College as well as a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Science in physiology from Temple University. Subsequently, he completed residencies in otolaryngology through the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Silverstein is a noted speaker at international medical conferences and an author of nearly 250 scientific papers and 6 books. Also, he is an accomplished jazz pianist. He recorded 14 CD albums, composed 60 songs and wrote two volumes of Jazz Harmony and Improvisation-the earnings from which are donated to a nonprofit ear research foundation.

For his outstanding work, Dr. Silverstein has been celebrated on many occasions. He was presented with the Board of Governors Award and a Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). Likewise, he accepted such accolades as the Award of Merit from the American Otological Society and the Howard P. House Award from the Ear Foundation, to name a few. In 2018, he was chosen to give the 7th Howard House Memorial Lecture, Otology/Neurotology Innovations: Despite Skeptics at the AAO-HNS. Looking toward the future, Dr. Silverstein intends to continue conducting breakthrough research in otolaryngology.
