The highlight of Dr. Richard Samuel Sarason's career has been helping his students grow and open their minds.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, in 1969, Dr. Sarason obtained a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1974. Soon thereafter, he secured a Doctor of Philosophy in religious studies from Brown University in Providence, RI, in 1977. During this time, he began his career as an instructor with Brown University from 1976 to 1977. He further progressed with Brown University, serving as an assistant professor of religious studies between 1977 and 1979. Dr. Sarason continued his career at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, OH, where he served as an assistant professor and an associate professor before achieving his current position as a full professor of Rabbinic literature and thought in 1990. He has also been serving as the director of the Pines School of Graduate Studies since 2015.

Civically, Dr. Sarason was active in the Cincinnati Jewish Federation Leadership Council from 1979 to 1987, serving as its president in 1984-85, and was a board member of the Cincinnati Jewish Community Relations Council from 1979 to 1987. He has sung with community choruses between 1980 and 1989 and again since 2016. A published author since 1978, his written works include A History of the Mishnaic Law of Agriculture: A Study of Tractate Demai, The Talmud of the Land of Israel: A Preliminary Translation and Analysis. Tractate Demai and Divrei Mishkan T'filah: Delving into the Siddur. He has also contributed articles on Rabbinic literature and Jewish liturgy to professional journals and book chapters. To remain aware of developments in the field, Dr. Sarason has maintained relationships with various professional organizations. These include the Society for Values in Higher Education, the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Association for Jewish Studies and Phi Beta Kappa.

As a testament to his accomplishments in the field, Dr. Sarason has been the recipient of the Shaarei Shirah Award from the Guild of Temple Musicians, the Kate S. Mack Award from the Jewish Federation, and the David H. Ellenson Faculty Award from the Women of Reform Judaism. The highlight of his career, however, has been helping his students grow and open their minds. Outside of his career, he enjoys music, theater and cinema.
