Futrell, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Futrell celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Having demonstrated over 50 years of professional excellence to his career, Dr. Futrell was designated Battelle Fellow Emeritus at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in 2013. He served as Battelle Fellow and senior science officer for PNNL from 2002 to 2013; he previously held the role of Director of the William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory from 1999 to 2002. Earlier in his career, Dr. Futrell served in various senior positions with the University of Delaware, the University of Utah, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Exxon Research Laboratories.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Futrell has been active on advisory councils and as an adjunct and visiting professor with a number of additional universities. An accomplished writer in his field, he has authored two books and over 500 articles for professional journals. By special invitation he served as Editor and senior author of "Centennial of Mass Spectrometry," which was published by the International Journal of Mass Spectrometry in 2010. Impressively, Dr. Futrell is the inventor of tandem mass spectrometry and is responsible for over 20 major advances in mass spectrometry that contribute to our fundamental understanding of ion chemistry and physics.

Prior to embarking on his independant research career, Dr. Futrell earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering summa cum laude from the Louisiana Tech University in 1955. He continued his studies with the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry in 1958. In order to remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Futrell maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry.

First recognized with a fellowship from the National Science Foundation from 1955 to 1957, Dr. Futrell has accepted countless fellowships over the years. He received the Erwin Schrodinger Gold Medal from the International Symposium on Atomic and Surface Physics in 2000. In 2007, he was awarded the Frank H. Field and Joe L. Franklin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mass Spectrometry by the American Chemical Society and the Wolfgang Paul Lectureship by the German Society for Mass Spectrometry. In 2014, Dr. Futrell's career was transcribed by the Center for Oral History at the Science History Institute in Philadelphia.
