Ms. Emmett is a mathematician who has been employed with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN, for the past 46 years. After graduating from college, she was quickly hired by Oak Ridge nuclear lab personnel. Taken on board as a mathematician and computer specialist in 1960, she remained in her position for 20 years. She later spent 19 years as a computing consultant and affirmative action representative from 1980 to 1999 and became the head of the section of nuclear code development in 1987, where she remains today. Ms. Emmett was notably only the fourth female to be hired in the nuclear research industry at that time.
Extremely talented in her field, Ms. Emmett was responsible for writing code for the lab's computers, which are still being used today. It was an extremely difficult task that no one else had done before. During her career, she also served as a delegate for the American Nuclear Community Leaders in the USSR, Hungary and Czechoslovakia during 1986. She has been a longtime member of the Fountain City Town Hall in Knoxville, TN, since 1973. Ms. Emmett was bestowed the President's Award for Performance within Martin Marietta Energy Systems in September 1989. She also received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Nuclear Society in 1996 and was named an Outstanding Leader and Advocate by the Association for Women in Science in 1998. In 1993, she was granted the Outstanding Service Award by the American Nuclear Society and in June 2001, Ms. Emmett was conferred the membership grade of Fellow by the American Nuclear Society. Ms. Emmett was recognized by the U.S. Women in Nuclear and granted the Patricia Bryant Leadership Award in July 2014.
Ms. Emmett has authored numerous poetry works over the years. In fact, she received a Golden Poet Award in 1988 for one of her pieces. She served as an editor for The Tennessean newsletter between 1985 and 1987 and has contributed articles to several professional journals.
Involved with the American Nuclear Society for many years, Ms. Emmett is a member and former executive board member and chair of the Oak Ridge-Knoxville section and the radiation protection and shielding division. She is also a member and former branch president, Tennessee president and Securities and Exchange Commission regional director of the American Association of University Women. Furthermore, she is a longtime member of the Association of Women in Science, Phi Kappa Phi and Kappa Mu Epsilon.
Ms. Emmett endowed the Margaret Emmett educational grant for creating the engineering aspect for the sixth and seventh grade girls Sharing Adventures in Engineering and Science (SHADES) program in January 2019 in Oak Ridge. SHADES is a program of highly interactive, demonstration-oriented presentations on science and engineering topics designed for sixth and seventh grade girls and their mathematics and science teachers. The goal is to show girls that these disciplines are fun and interesting and that career opportunities are very diverse. The teacher program focuses on techniques for making science and math more interesting to girls. Ms. Emmett has notably been cited in the first and fifth editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. She has held a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Tennessee Technological University since 1960 and completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Tennessee between 1965 and 1970.
Married to the late John McCue Emmett for just over 30 years, Ms. Emmett has two children. She married Raymond L. McDonough, Sr. in 2008. She loves reading, working on computers, ballroom dancing and watching sports.
